Position: PT Electrical Apprenticeship Instructor (EWD)
Location: Castle Hayne

Definition

To provide classroom instruction to students in the high schools of New Hanover County through lecture, demonstration, laboratory exercises, handouts, responding to questions, and testing.

Employees within this class are supervised by CFCC but must also follow the rules, policies and procedures for New Hanover County Schools (NHCS).

Essential and Other Important Functions Statements

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to:

Essential Functions
  • Provide classroom and laboratory instruction to students.
  • Prepare lesson plans and schedule classroom activities; develop, and prepare supplemental materials to enhance textbook lessons.
  • Develop and prepare tests to evaluate student performance; grade and record individual scores.
  • Act as an advisor and academic counselor to students as needed.
  • Provide classroom demonstrations on various equipment and machinery; develop laboratory assignments to provide hands on experience as appropriate.
  • Participate in curriculum development, evaluation, and change; attend faculty meetings as required.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, and performance; maintain other records and databases according to program needs, NHCS and accreditation requirements.
  • Stay abreast of new developments, and changes in various academic fields; participate in staff development programs, workshops, seminars, and other continuing education programs as appropriate.
  • Oversee the implementation of policies and procedures related to required teaching area.
  • Participate on college committees and in other institutional activities and programs.
Other Important Functions
  • Assess the relevancy and impact of various lessons; revise and improve lesson format; evaluate various text books and select books to be used for future classes.
  • Demonstrate competence regarding the handling of hazardous substance such as blood borne pathogens.
  • Demonstrate community involvement.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Qualifications Knowledge
  • Classroom and laboratory instructional techniques and procedures.
  • Principles and procedures of academic and instructional program development and administration in the area of assignment.
  • Current trends, research, and development in the area of assignment.
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping.
  • Principles and techniques involved in test development and administration.
  • Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
Ability To
  • Interpret and apply college goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations.

Maintain effective audio‑visual discrimination and perception needed for:

  • making observations
  • reading and writing
  • communicating with others
  • operating assigned equipment
  • handling varied tasks simultaneously.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:

  • standing or sitting for extended periods of time
  • operating assigned equipment
  • preparing and presenting instructional material.
  • Maintain mental capacity, which allows the capability of:

  • making sound decisions
  • responding to questions
  • demonstrating intellectual capabilities.
    • Communicate clearly, and concisely, both orally and in writing.
    • Establish and maintain cooperative‑working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
    Experience and Training Guidelines

    Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

    Minimum Education /Training
    • Training as an electrician.
    Minimum Experience
    • A minimum of two years of experience working in the electrical field.
    Preferred Education/Training, Experience, Skills
    • Electrician license preferred.
    • NCCER instructor training.
    • OSHA instructor training.
    • One or more years of experience in an instructional setting as a tutor or teacher is preferred.
    Work Environment
    • This position is located at 2 NHCS high schools. This may include traveling from one high school to the other in the same day.
    • This position receives specific direction relating to NHCS policies and procedures from Administrative staff at the high school work site.
    • This position is a temporary position to substitute for the full‑time instructor while they are on leave.
