Job Description

Reports to: Principal

Supervises: May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.

Purpose: To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Management of Instructional Time: The teacher has materials, supplies, and equipment ready at the start of each lesson; gets the class started quickly; gets students on task quickly; maintains a high level of student time‑on‑task.
  • Management of Student Behavior: The teacher has established rules and procedures for routine administrative matters, verbal participation, talk during activities, and student movement; frequently monitors behavior; stops inappropriate behavior promptly and consistently while maintaining dignity.
  • Instructional Presentation: The teacher begins lessons with a review, introduces objectives, speaks fluently, presents concepts in understandable language, provides examples and demos, assigns tasks students handle with success, asks appropriate questions, conducts the lesson at a brisk pace with smooth transitions, ensures assignment clarity, and summarizes main points.
  • Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance: Maintains clear standards, circulates work, checks performance, uses oral, written, and other checks, poses questions clearly.
  • Instructional Feedback: Provides feedback on correctness to encourage growth; gives prompt feedback on out‑of‑class work; confirms correct responses; offers sustaining feedback after incorrect or no responses.
  • Facilitating Instruction: Uses an instructional plan aligned with school and system‑wide goals; uses diagnostic data to develop and revise objectives; maintains records; uses resources to support instruction.
  • Interacting Within the Educational Environment: Treats all students fairly; interacts effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, and community.
  • Performing Non‑Instructional Duties: Carries out non‑instructional duties as assigned; adheres to laws, policies, and regulations; follows a professional‑development plan and demonstrates growth.

Minimum Training and Experience

Degree in education or related area that qualifies for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to use a variety of equipment, lift/carry small objects, consistent with light work.
  • Data Conception: Ability to compare and judge characteristics of data, people, or things.
  • Interpersonal Communication: Ability to speak, signal, convey information, and receive instructions.
  • Language Ability: Ability to read correspondence, prepare reports, instructional materials, in prescribed format.
  • Intelligence: Ability to apply logical/scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, draw conclusions.
  • Verbal Aptitude: Ability to record, deliver, explain procedures, follow instructions, communicate in technical languages.
  • Numerical Aptitude: Ability to use mathematical formulas, arithmetic, decimals, percentages, descriptive statistics, inference.
  • Form/Spatial Aptitude: Ability to inspect items for length, width, shape.
  • Motor Coordination: Ability to coordinate hand/eye movements with office equipment.
  • Manual Dexterity: Ability to handle various items, handle with minimal coordination.
  • Color Discrimination: Ability to differentiate colors.
  • Interpersonal Temperament: Ability to deal with people, adapt under stress, handle emergencies.
  • Physical Communication: Ability to talk and hear, communicate via telephone.
