Job DescriptionReports To: Principal
Supervises: May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.
Purpose: To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe teacher has materials, supplies, and equipment for each lesson ready at the start of the lesson or instructional activity; gets the class started quickly; gets students on task quickly at the beginning of each lesson; maintains a high level of student time-on-task.
The teacher has established a set of rules and procedures that govern routine administrative matters and student verbal participation, talk, and movement during various activities; frequently monitors student behavior during whole‑class, small group, seat work activities and transitions; stops inappropriate behavior promptly and consistently while maintaining the dignity of the student.
The teacher begins the lesson or instructional activity with a review of previous materials; introduces the lesson and specific learning objectives when appropriate; speaks fluently and precisely; presents concepts and language understandable to the students; provides relevant examples and demonstrations; assigns tasks that students handle with a high success rate; asks appropriate questions; conducts the lesson at a brisk pace, slowing when necessary;
makes efficient transitions; ensures assignments are clear; summarizes main points at the end.
The teacher maintains clear, firm, and reasonable work standards and due dates; circulates during class work to check performance; uses oral, written, and other work products to assess progress; asks questions clearly and one at a time.
The teacher provides feedback on in‑class work to encourage growth; gives prompt feedback on out‑of‑class work; affirms correct oral responses and probes after incorrect or no responses to sustain learning.
The teacher has an instructional plan compatible with school and system‑wide curricular goals; uses diagnostic information from tests and assessments to revise objectives and tasks; maintains accurate records; aligns objectives, learning strategies, assessment, and student needs; uses available resources to support instruction.
The teacher treats all students fairly and equitably; interacts effectively with students, coworkers, parents, and the community.
The teacher carries out non‑instructional duties as assigned; follows laws, policies, rules, and regulations; adheres to a professional development plan and demonstrates growth.
Performs other related work as required.
Minimum Training and ExperienceDegree in education or a related area that qualifies for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions- Physical Requirements: Ability to use various equipment and classroom tools; exert negligible force to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects; consistent with light work due to standing and walking.
- Data Conception: Ability to compare and judge functional, structural, or composite characteristics of data, people, or things.
- Interpersonal Communication: Ability to speak, sign, and receive instructions and directions from superiors.
- Language Ability: Ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, handbooks, forms; prepare simple reports and instructional materials using prescribed format.
- Intelligence: Ability to apply logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; interpret technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form.
