Reports to: Principal
Terms of Employment: Full Time (10 Months)
Salary: NC State Salary Schedule
FLSA Exempt/Non-Exempt: Exempt
Qualifications:
- Must hold or have the ability to obtain a North Carolina Teacher License, or
- Must meet the qualifications for Residency Teacher License.
- May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.
Essential Job Functions:
- Cooperate in the development of annual objectives for the school and plan an instructional program that incorporates these objectives.
- Incorporate learner objectives compatible with the subject, grade level, established curriculum, and student needs.
- Assess the instructional program to determine its effectiveness.
- Maintain an effective program by establishing and maintaining adequate knowledge of subject areas and child growth and development.
- Attend and participate in staff development, professional learning communities, and other relevant training.
- Stay abreast of and implement current evidence‑based research practices to increase student achievement.
- Ensure that instruction, materials, and procedures are appropriate for the subject taught and for the needs of students.
- Ensure the application and practice are used by students to acquire or reinforce a concept or skill.
- Encourage students, parents, and others to become actively involved in daily instruction.
- Collaborate with parents, employees, and community to create a supportive approach to reaching students.
- Assess individual student abilities to devise techniques that accommodate differences in learning rates, styles, and ability levels, including long‑term or short‑term grouping or differentiation of materials and equipment.
- Monitor individual student achievement continuously, employ a variety of teaching methods to meet student needs, and provide remediation as required.
- Implement professional classroom‑management techniques to maintain an appropriate instructional environment.
- Make use of community resources, student talent, volunteers, and other school personnel to enhance instruction.
- Demonstrate respect for the dignity and worth of all students, value cultural differences, and maintain communication with parents.
- Accept responsibility for non‑instructional duties as may be assigned by the principal, superintendent, school board, or other administrative personnel.
- Conduct oneself to promote a safe, secure, and orderly environment, fostering a climate of respect and modeling appropriate personal conduct.
- Report acts of violence to the principal.
The teacher's primary functions are:
- Direct the growth and development of pupils.
- Assume responsibilities toward the safe, efficient operation, and improvement of the total program of the school.
- Teach the required curriculum as adopted by the Board.
Additional responsibilities may include:
- Bus duty
- Cafeteria supervision
- Playground duty
- Supervision of extracurricular activities (subject to policy regarding experienced teachers)
- Attend professional development or other training
- Service on committees
- All other duties as assigned by the Superintendent, principal, or supervisor.
Physical and Cognitive Requirements:
- Ability to prepare, read and comprehend a variety of job‑related forms, reports, spreadsheets, maps, plans, records, documentation, and correspondence in all languages required by the job.
- Understand and conform to rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style.
- Speak to individuals or groups with poise, voice control, and confidence.
- Respond appropriately to inquiries or complaints.
- Write using standard conventions in all required languages.
- Apply logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Use common sense to carry out written, oral, or diagrammatic instructions.
- Communicate effectively and efficiently in all required languages using required devices or systems.
- Interpret job‑related terminology, mathematical formulas, and functions effectively and efficiently.
- Deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
- Perform under stress, deal with persons acting under stress, and adapt when confronted with emergency situations.
- Be sensitive to cultural differences among individuals and groups.
- Operate a motor vehicle.
- Operate or use a variety of automated office machines and other office equipment.
- Operate or use a variety of printing/graphic arts machines.
- Operate or use a variety of audiovisual/electronic machines and devices.
- Operate or use a variety of communication machines, equipment, or devices.
- Operate or use a variety of job‑specific machines or equipment.
