Job Description

The Lead Teacher plans and provides appropriate learning experiences for students and teachers. They create an atmosphere conducive to intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development. The Lead Teacher supervises students and teachers, monitors and evaluates outcomes, and communicates with students, parents, staff, and the community. They assist teachers with strategies for assessments and student needs, evaluate teaching effectiveness, review data, and implement continuous improvement practices.

The Lead Teacher develops, selects, and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students. They maintain records, follow procedures, monitor use and care of equipment, and oversee classroom, Pre‑K, core curriculum, specialty, media, languages, and remediation areas as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Extensive knowledge of RCSS curriculum and techniques for integrating curriculum and policies.
  • Thorough understanding of teaching and learning processes.
  • Knowledge of current literature, trends, and developments in reading instruction.
  • Ability to provide instruction reflecting multiple perspectives and multicultural education.
  • Ability to incorporate technology into the curriculum.
  • Ability to monitor safety and well‑being of students, especially in inclusive activities.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire students.
  • Ability to maintain a clean and orderly environment.
  • Skill in counseling and staff development.
  • Ability to review testing results and develop action plans.
  • Ability to perform general clerical duties.
  • Ability to maintain order and discipline in classroom and school settings.
  • Ability to operate common office machines.
  • Ability to maintain basic files and records.
  • Ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office, staff, students, parents, and community.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
Education, Training, and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in an applicable field.
  • For transfers, must have received routine meets standard or above standard evaluations with no action plans.
  • Equivalent training and experience that provides required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Certification and License Requirements
  • Valid NC teacher’s license in applicable field and level.
  • Must not be on the NCDPI list of teachers no longer qualified to teach.
  • Must possess a valid NC driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience and licensure for appropriate grade levels served.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work with the school improvement team and principal to assess professional development needs and support professional development activities.
  • Assist new teachers and others in need of support in the classroom.
  • Collaborate with teachers to identify strengths, needs, potential problems, and locate resources.
  • Interpret and understand school testing data and share results with teachers.
  • Support teachers individually in planning and implementing instructional plans.
  • Collaborate with grade levels and departments on scheduling and planning (pacing guides, long‑range planning for next year, resource utilization).
  • Provide information, mentoring, coaching, and model instruction to improve teaching.
  • Gather best practices, strategies, and resources across disciplines to share with colleagues.
  • Maintain open communication with teachers, administrators, and district staff to improve instruction.
  • Collaborate with district lead teachers, program specialists, and curriculum directors.
  • Attend district workshops and professional development to stay current with best practices.
  • Provide professional development at school and district levels for new and existing teachers.
  • Observe classrooms informally to support teachers; formal observations handled elsewhere.
  • Demonstrate high ethical and professional behavior.
  • Model and demonstrate effective teaching strategies; may teach up to one class per semester as a model.
