Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Special Education Adapted Curriculum or other qualifying area and willingness to obtain Adapted Curriculum add‑on.
  • North Carolina teaching license or ability to acquire within timeline and guidelines set forth by the North Carolina Department of Instruction.
  • Initial certification in nonviolent crisis intervention (de‑escalation and physical restraint) and maintenance of that certification through proper renewal processes.
Essential Job Functions
  • Promote meaningful growth in academics, interpersonal skills, and activities of daily living for students with significant disabilities through individualized instruction and assessment aligned to the NC Extended Content Standards.
  • Develop Individual Education Programs (IEP) for students with disabilities; implement the IEP; and use diagnostic information from tests, assessment procedures, and progress monitoring data to update IEPs as needed.
  • Provide direct special education instruction to identified students.
  • Employ a variety of teaching methods to meet student needs; adapt or develop materials as required.
  • Monitor student behavior, maintain classroom discipline, de‑escalate inappropriate behaviors, and teach appropriate behavioral strategies.
  • Assist students with personal and self‑help needs such as eating, toileting, and other essential tasks they cannot perform independently.
  • Communicate with parents regarding their child's educational progress via periodic written reports.
  • Act as case manager for assigned students.
  • Maintain student records and adhere to North Carolina policies governing services for children with disabilities and comply with local, state, and federal policies.
  • Treat all students fairly and equitably; interact effectively with students, colleagues, parents, and the community.
  • Follow a professional development plan and demonstrate evidence of growth.
  • Maintain basic files and records.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships as needed.
  • Complete random moment‑in‑time studies as required by MAC program guidelines.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities assigned by supervisor.
Physical and Cognitive Requirements

Light physical work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds occasionally. Must be able to:

  • Walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, kneel, crouch, and perform repetitive motions.
  • Use visual acuity for preparing and analyzing written or computer data.
  • Visually inspect small defects and/or small parts.
  • Operate a variety of machines, motor vehicles, hand, and job‑specific equipment and tools.
  • Determine accuracy and thoroughness of work.
  • Observe general surroundings and activities.
  • Communicate by spoken word, convey detailed or important instructions accurately or quickly.
  • Safely work in situations of exposure to blood‑borne pathogens that may require specialized personal protective equipment.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Establish positive relationships with students.
  • Deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
  • Perform under stress, address persons acting under stress, and adapt when confronted with emergency situations.
  • Work with both children and adults with disabilities.
  • Lift students of various weights independently and with shared responsibility.
