The position may be hired at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Agent level, depending on the applicant’s qualifications.
The Area Agent is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating outcome-based programs that address livestock issues and opportunities in Perquimans County and the surrounding primary counties—Chowan, Gates, and Pasquotank. Secondary support is provided for Hertford, Bertie, Washington, Tyrrell, Hyde, Beaufort, Dare, Camden, and Currituck. The role requires a dynamic individual with broad knowledge of animal agriculture—including swine, cattle (beef and dairy), lambs, goats, poultry, and horses—and a commitment to community outreach.

- Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs focused on consumer & commercial livestock production, pasture management, animal nutrition, and waste management.
- Provide leadership for 4‑H and youth livestock programs and assist with the Albemarle and Chowan Area 4‑H Livestock Shows.
- Assess client needs, evaluate program impacts, and collaborate with other Extension programs, staff, agencies, and community organizations.
- Network with agents, specialists, and local producers to plan and implement innovative field days and educational programs.
- Maintain organized programs that adhere to NC Cooperative Extension, county, and national laws, policies, and guidelines.
- Develop and implement outreach strategies to engage emerging farmers, beginning farmers, and the broader agricultural community.
The Agent will partner with county departments such as Emergency Services, Animal Control, Soil & Water, NRCS, and FSA to provide relevant resources, and will offer guidance on business planning and management as needed.
Requirements and Preferences- Bachelor's degree in Animal Science or a related agricultural field (Master's preferred). One-half of a Master's curriculum or an equivalent Master's degree is also acceptable.
- At least 3 years of experience in animal agriculture or a related field.
- Strong communication, presentation, and public relations skills.
- Proficiency in technology, networking, and resource development.
- Valid North Carolina driver’s license and reliable personal transportation.
- Physical ability to work on farms and rural sites.
- Availability for Monday–Friday business hours and occasional evenings and weekends.
- Willingness to travel within the district and state (travel reimbursed following state guidelines).
