JOB DESCRIPTION:
SCHOOL LIBRARY MEDIA SPECIALIST
To provide the leadership and instructional resources and services for implementation of a school library media program that serves as an integral part of a student-centered educational process. Coordinates and directs the activities of school library media support personnel including library media assistants, technical assistants, student assistants, and volunteers. Reports to the school principal.
Essential Job Functions- Facilitate implementation of 1:1 initiative.
- Assess learning and information needs of students and staff.
- Plan and work collaboratively with teachers to implement innovative teaching strategies using technology.
- Provide direct assistance to students and staff with troubleshooting technology problems.
- Instruct students and staff in the effective use of ideas and information.
- Coordinate and implement professional development based on staff needs.
- Incorporate information literacy into day-to-day instruction.
- Advocate and promote reading and lifelong learning.
- Lead the school's use of instructional technology to enhance learning.
- Work with the principal and school leadership team to provide flexible access to school library media center resources.
- Create and maintain an environment conducive to learning.
- Encourage the widest possible use of print and electronic resources and services within the school library media center, throughout the school, and through remote access.
- Lead teachers, technology staff, and students in a collaborative process to select and evaluate print and digital resources that address curricular needs and learning goals of students and teachers in the information age.
- Configure digital resources for use by students and staff for instruction and assessment.
- Keep accurate inventories of print, non-print, and technology materials and equipment.
- Work cooperatively with other libraries and agencies to share resources that enhance teaching and learning.
- Implement an ongoing collection development and evaluation process, in collaboration with the Media and Technology Advisory Committee, focusing on a variety of formats and resources to meet diverse learning needs.
- Adhere to copyright as well as other laws and guidelines pertaining to the distribution and use of resources.
- Advocate the principles of intellectual freedom and ethical behavior.
- Plan and implement program administration.
- Work with school staff to design and implement short- and long-range plans to ensure balance among teaching, instructional technology, collaboration, collection development, and program management.
- Evaluate the school library media program on a continual basis according to accepted standards of quality.
- Organize school library media facilities and resources in a manner that supports the mission, goals, and objectives of the school and maximizes intellectual and physical access to resources.
- Lead in the budgetary process of the school through the Media and Technology Advisory Committee to ensure equity of access to instructional materials.
- Lead the Media and Technology Advisory Committee in effective decision making to promote the school library media program.
- Interact effectively with students, staff, administration, and the general public to promote and expand the school library media program.
- Demonstrate professional integrity through ethical behavior.
- Prepare and submit accurate reports as required.
- Carry out assigned non-instructional duties and adhere to established laws and policies.
- Must hold, or be eligible to hold, a NC Professional Educator's License in Library Science/Media Coordinator or Instructional Technology Program.
- Master’s Degree in Library Science/Media.
