TEACHER ASSISTANT-EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN

Nature of WorkUnder general supervision, performs a variety of technical and clerical tasks assisting a teacher of self‑contained students. Supports the teacher’s efforts, meets student needs, and ensures quality instruction. Provides one‑on‑one assistance with academics and behavior, leads small‑group activities, and assists with housekeeping and clerical duties.
Duties and Responsibilities- Assists teacher with executing instruction and evaluating its effectiveness.
- Monitors safety and well‑being of students, encourages self‑esteem, and promotes independence.
- Supervises students in classrooms, halls, cafeterias, yards, gymnasiums, and field trips.
- Maintains classroom discipline, records time‑outs and suspensions, assists with crisis prevention, and restrains students as needed.
- Enforces school policies and assists with bus loading/unloading.
- Supports student learning: reinforces instructions, conducts study‑skill sessions, creates and modifies materials, and provides one‑on‑one assistance.
- Attends staff development activities when requested.
- Maintains standardized records and documentation concerning student progress.
- Participates in teacher‑parent conferences and IEP meetings regarding student progress when required.
- Performs housekeeping duties, repairs, and maintenance of classroom equipment.
- Distributes teaching materials, tests, and homework; collects them when completed.
- Instructs and monitors students in the use and care of equipment and materials.
- Performs clerical duties: grades papers, scores tests, checks daily attendance, makes copies, displays instructional materials, operates audiovisual equipment, orders supplies, and maintains class files.
- Feeds students and assists with toileting when necessary.
- Provides assistive devices and technology for disabled students and assists in access to facilities.
- Performs other related work as required.
- A minimum of 48 semester hours of college coursework.
- Must have or be able to obtain a CDL to drive a bus within 4 months of employment.
- Use a variety of equipment and classroom tools (computers, copiers, typewriters, calculators, pencils, scissors, specialized equipment for children with special needs).
- Exert negligible force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or move objects.
- Apply rational systems to solve practical problems and interpret instructions in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form.
- Record and deliver information, explain procedures, and follow oral and written instructions.
- Interact with people beyond simply giving and receiving instructions.
- General knowledge of teaching activities, classroom routines, student handbook, emergency procedures, and methods of adapting instruction, equipment, and tools for children with special needs.
- Knowledge of principles of organization and administration and of the grade‑level curriculum.
- Constantly monitor safety and well‑being of students in inclusive activities.
- Motivate students; maintain a clean, orderly environment; perform general clerical and office machine duties.
- Maintain basic records and files; understand and follow instructions; establish effective working relationships.
