- Reports to the Principal.
- Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
- Read the Middle School Responsive Advisory Meeting book and become familiar with the middle school Responsive Classroom approach.
- Uses Responsive Classroom practices to create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity of the students.
- Teaches students to care and build relationships through positive behavior and language toward students, staff, and the community.
- Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
- Maintains a clean and organized classroom that supports student learning and reflects respect for classrooms.
- Implements daily routines and procedures that promote student responsibility for the cleanliness of the classroom and school.
- Demonstrates a thorough understanding of the ACS curriculum by actively engaging in training, asking questions, and implementing instructional plans effectively.
- Creates and shares a schedule at the beginning of the year with EC Facilitators, Principal, Assistant Principal, and Managing Director.
- Routinely updates the schedule and caseload when there are changes.
- Serves students 5 days per week.
- No more than 2 hours may be set aside on Wednesdays for IEP meetings and paperwork during the instructional day.
- Consistently and with fidelity serves students as outlined in their IEPs regarding time and days per week for each subject area.
- Develops Individual Education Programs (IEPs) for assigned caseload and plans and implements instruction as outlined in each student’s IEP.
- Lesson plans are based on students’ IEP goals, objectives, assessment data and meet ACS lesson plan non‑negotiables.
- Guides learning toward curriculum goals, establishes clear objectives, and communicates them to students.
- Employs a variety of instructional techniques and media appropriate to the physical limitations of the location and the needs and capabilities of the students.
- Assesses student accomplishments regularly and provides progress reports as required.
- Maintains records of data used to determine if goals and objectives are met, and keeps accurate, complete, and correct records per law and regulation.
- Serves as a case manager for the assigned caseload and collaborates with general education teachers and other members of the IEP team.
- Schedules meetings and provides IEP team members with advance notice.
- Communicates with parents regarding their children’s progress.
- Maintains documentation of student present levels of performance and provides written, data‑driven progress reports.
- Advocates for students, being honest and fair while encouraging their success.
- Meets deadlines for annual reviews and reevaluations.
- Maintains documentation of service delivery and can provide it upon request.
- Assists the Administration in implementing policies and rules governing the Exceptional Children’s Program.
- Is available outside the instructional day for education‑related purposes under reasonable terms.
- Attends meetings, serves on staff committees, and participates with the MTSS Team when needed.
- Ensures data is properly maintained for each student in Power School and ECATS and complies with district reporting in Power School.
- Assists with test security paperwork, creates small group testing environments, and provides orientation, in‑service training, and professional development as needed.
- Stays informed of best practices, trends, and educational innovations.
- Complies with the Daily Check‑in and Check‑out System.
- Reads and understands the entire Employee Handbook, Parent‑Student Handbook, and the ACS Employee Code of Ethics & General Standards of Conduct.
- Minimum Bachelor of Arts or Science in Education or field of instruction.
- NC Certification/Teaching License in Special Education or the ability to receive a NC Teaching License.
- Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
- U.S. citizenship, residency, or valid work visa required.
