General Statement of DutiesPerforms intermediate, semiskilled work providing support to the assigned branch of the Carteret County Public Library system.
Distinguishing Features of the ClassThis position is responsible for providing technical support work related the processing and addition of materials to the library collection. Work involves copy cataloging in compliance with NC Cardinal best practices. The employee will assist in identifying materials that should be removed from the collection due to damage, disuse, or obsolescence. The employee will evaluate and process donated materials, new periodicals, and may perform basic repairs on library materials.
This position will supervisor and perform as needed will periodically visit the branch libraries to work on collection maintenance and will serve as the resource sharing technician in charge of materials being shipped and received via the statewide consortium. This position is responsible for resolving technical issues, performing technical research, maintaining service efficiencies and supervision of employees within assigned unit.
Work is performed under the direct general supervision of the Assistant Library Director and is reviewed through observation and public feedback for quality and effectiveness in fulfillment of library objectives as out lined by the Library Director.
- Oversees the Resource Sharing Program and staff which includes courier services between branches, boxing up materials to be shipped, as well as unpacking and sorting received materials.
- Receives, unpacks, catalogs, labels, and covers all new materials and donations.
- Catalogs books and other materials in accordance with NC Cardinal best practices and library standards.
- Maintains periodicals and newspapers in accordance with NC Cardinal best practices and library standards.
- Participates in the hiring, training and supervision of unit staff; develops, evaluates and maintains high performance from supervised staff.
- Identifies and pursues opportunities for continuous improvements to library services and staff effectiveness.
- Maintains statistics and records; prepares reports and documentation.
- Processes books and other materials, as needed.
- Weeds Removes materials from the collection based on reports or condition of disuse.
- Reviews donations to the library.
- Oversees the Resource Sharing Program, boxing up materials to be shipped, as well as unpacking and sorting received materials.
- Receives and unpacks new materials that have been ordered.
- Provides excellent customer service to staff and patrons.
- Applies Classifies grid to newly identified materials from selected by Branch Managers prior to ordering.
- Performs library mailroom activities.
- Trains and learns procedures in other library departments to enhance services.

Skills and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of library sciences.
- Thorough knowledge of technology and office productivity software applications, online databases, and knowledge of Evergreen Integrated Library System software preferably Evergreen ILS.
- General knowledge of the card catalogs, indexes, and other reference material used in the library.
- General knowledge of the methods to classify, catalog, and shelf-list books.
- General knowledge of research methods used in locating materials.
- Ability to produce and maintain records and reports.
- Ability to communicate effectively, patiently and courteously, both verbally and in writing; listen and respond appropriately to needs and concerns.
