Job Description

Reports To: Director

Supervises: May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.

Purpose: To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Management of Instructional Time: Teacher prepares materials, supplies, and equipment at start of lesson; gets class started quickly; ensures high student time‑on‑task.
  • Management of Student Behavior: Establishes rules and procedures for administrative matters, verbal participation, movement; monitors behavior; stops inappropriate behavior promptly, maintaining dignity.
  • Instructional Presentation: Begins lesson with review; introduces objectives; speaks fluently; presents content using understandable concepts; demonstrates; assigns tasks; asks appropriate questions; paces briskly; transitions smoothly; summarizes main points.
  • Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance: Maintains standards; circulates during class to check performance; uses oral, written products; poses questions clearly.
  • Instructional Feedback: Provides feedback on in‑class and out‑of‑class work; affirms correct responses; probes incorrect ones.
  • Facilitating Instruction: Has instructional plan aligning with school curricula, uses diagnostic info to develop/revise objectives, documents performance, uses resources.
  • Interacting Within the Educational Environment: Treats all students fairly, interacts effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, community.
  • Performing Non‑Instructional Duties: Carries out non‑instructional duties as assigned; adheres to laws, policies; follows PD plan and demonstrates growth.
  • Additional Job Functions

    Performs other related work as required.

    Minimum Training and Experience

    Degree in education or a related area that qualifies for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

    Physical and Cognitive Requirements
    • Must use equipment such as computers, copiers, typewriters, calculators, etc.
    • Can lift/carry objects with negligible force.
    • Physical fit for Light Work due to standing/walking.
    • Ability to compare and judge data and characteristics.
    • Interpersonal communication skill.
    • Language ability for reading and preparing documents.
    • Intelligence: apply logical thinking, problem definition, data collection, conclusions.
    • Verbal aptitude: deliver information, explain procedures.
    • Numerical aptitude: use formulas, arithmetic, statistics.
    • Form/spatial aptitude: inspect item dimensions.
    • Motor coordination: hand‑eye coordination with office equipment.
    • Manual dexterity: handle items and tools.
    • Color discrimination: differentiate colors.
    • Interpersonal temperament: handle stress, emergencies.
    • Physical communication: talk, hear, telephone.
    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Monitor safety and well‑being of students, especially inclusive activities.
    • Motivate students.
    • Maintain clean and orderly environment; perform general clerical duties.
    • Maintain order and discipline in classroom.
    • Operate common office machines; maintain files and records.
    • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
