Nature of WorkUnder general supervision, provides special education services to students identified as disabled, developing and implementing Individual Education Programs (IEP) in classroom settings that match the student’s age and developmental level. Responsibilities include creating lesson plans, adapting materials, designing activities to support academic, behavioral, and social skill development, monitoring progress, and maintaining records in compliance with state and federal guidelines.
Duties and Responsibilities- Develop and implement instructional plans aligned with school and system-wide curricular goals and individual IEPs.
- Create and update IEPs using diagnostic information from tests and assessments.
- Provide direct special education instruction to identified students.
- Employ a variety of teaching methods, adapting or developing materials as needed.
- Monitor student behavior, maintain discipline, deescalate inappropriate behaviors, teach behavioral strategies, restrain students when necessary, and record and report restraints.
- Assist disabled students with personal and self‑help needs such as eating, toileting, and other essential tasks.
- Communicate with parents regarding educational progress through periodic written reports.
- Act as case coordinator, consulting with community caregivers, school support professionals, and parents.
- Maintain student records in accordance with North Carolina’s Procedures Governing Programs and Services for Children with Disabilities and comply with state and federal statutes.
- Treat all students fairly, interact effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, and community.
- Follow a professional development plan and demonstrate growth.
- Complete random moment‑in‑time studies as required by MAC program guidelines.
- Perform other related work as required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Special Education with at least one area of disability.
- Valid North Carolina teaching license.
- Proficient in using classroom equipment such as computers, copiers, calculators, and specialized tools for children with special needs.
- Physically capable of lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling objects with minimal force.
- Ability to compare and evaluate functional and structural data.
- Effective communication skills, including verbal, written, and signaling.
- Preparedness to produce correspondence, reports, forms, and instructional materials in prescribed formats.
- Apply logical and scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions and interpret complex instructions.
- Adaptability under stress and in emergency situations.
- Ability to talk and hear.
