Exceptional Children Teacher Assistant
Location:
EJ Hayes Elementary School – Williamston, North Carolina.
Starting Date:
Aug 11, 2026. Employment Term: 10 months. Position Type:
Full‑time. Salary: $15 per hour.
The Exceptional Children Teacher Assistant supports the lead teacher in providing instruction, behavior management, classroom assistance, clerical duties and occasional school bus driving for students with special needs.
Qualifications- Associate Degree in Education or 48 semester hours of transferable college coursework (official transcript required). OR Bronze‑level Work Keys Career Readiness Certification (NCRC) or higher and a score of 3 or higher on the Work Keys Business Writing assessment.
- Experience working with children with special needs and behavioral challenges.
- Current and valid driver’s license. Bus driving duty is an essential function.
- Assists teacher in executing instruction and evaluating its effectiveness.
- Monitors student safety, behavior and discipline; records suspensions and assists with crisis prevention.
- Provides one‑on‑one academic assistance and small group instruction; reinforces study skills.
- Maintains standardized student records, incident reports and attendance logs; grades papers and scores tests.
- Performs general housekeeping, repairs and maintenance of classroom equipment.
- Supports classroom activities, including feeding, toileting and other personal care as needed.
- Drives school bus as required to operate the transportation system.
- Performs additional related duties as directed by the supervisor.
- Knowledge of classroom routines, student handbook, emergency procedures and organizational practices.
- Understanding of methods to adapt instruction and equipment for students with special needs.
- Basic curriculum knowledge at the assigned grade level.
- Ability to monitor safety and well‑being of students, maintain discipline, and support inclusive activities.
- Proficiency with clerical duties, operating office equipment and maintaining files.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to follow instructions.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with staff and students.
- Light physical work; must lift up to 20 lb occasionally.
- Operate office and classroom equipment.
- Communicate effectively in standard English via telephone or in person.
- Basic numeracy, reading and data interpretation skills.
- Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
