The purpose of this position is to teach content focused on improving basic skills in core reading, writing, grammar, and mathematics areas through individual, small group, and whole class instruction, providing targeted remediation and enrichment as needed. The intent of this position is to deliver direct remedial instruction to offenders aged 18 to 22 to support their attainment of a high school equivalency diploma.
Salary to be determined by qualifications and years of experience within a range of $49,200 to $84,948.
This is a full-time, permanent and continuing position (40 hours per week) with state benefits. This is a year-round position.
Management preference for candidates who can show evidence of:
- Certification in multiple subjects (e.g., math and science).
- Utilizing a variety of educational practices and instructional methods (specifically for at-risk students) that align with best practices as well as with student needs,
- Documented experience in instructional and intervention planning for students, both as groups and individually
- Documented experience in utilizing data gathered through formative and summative classroom assessments, both formal and informal in nature, to identify, diagnose, evaluate, and modify instruction to meet the learning needs of individual students
- Communicating effectively with all pertinent stakeholders, in both oral and written formats
- Use technology-based productivity applications, software programs, and student information systems including, but not limited to, applications within the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.)
Demonstrate these skills, knowledge, abilities, and any management preferences on the application in education, duties, and work history.
This position is located within the academic school at Richmond Correctional Institution, Hoffman, NC (Richmond County).
Reporting to the School Principal, the Reading and Math Interventionist is a core member of the academic team responsible for implementing and monitoring the school's vision, mission, values, and goals. The teacher must be skilled at organizing and delivering education curricula to groups of students of all ages, creating a flexible program and a learning environment that supports each student's abilities and personal growth within a medium custody male correctional facility.
The teacher will also perform any additional duties assigned by the principal.
Job responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Designing lessons and instructional materials based on best practices in English/ language arts (reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary) and mathematics instruction with clear learning targets and measurable goals aligned with state standards and suitable for instruction of students with a wide range of mental, physical, and emotional maturity and functioning at a wide range of academic levels
- Providing effective direct group and individual instruction in pertinent English/ language arts (reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary) and mathematics content, designed to meet individual needs, motivate active and appropriate student participation, achieve academic goals, and help students make successful transitions within the academic school, the prison system, and back into society
- Developing, implementing, and communicating standards of student conduct and a classroom management plan which supports the accepted school-wide behavior plan
- Managing classroom behavior and maintaining an orderly classroom using effective behavioral management techniques
- Collaborating with fellow teachers and other school personnel regarding students and best instructional practices
Compensation for all certified educators working for NCDAC in school educator positions is based on the NC Department of Public Instruction's Salary Schedule. This schedule is approved annually by the NC General Assembly and sets pay based on the educator's years of experience and education level.
