Professional Tutor in Math/Science or Spanish (Part‑Time)

This position facilitates student learning by helping students clarify specific course content and modeling appropriate study strategies.

Responsibilities
  • Adhere to all tutoring guidelines as outlined by the Academic Support Center director.
  • Meet with assigned tutees in designated Academic Support Center locations or other preapproved areas.
  • Consult with a tutee’s instructors for advice, guidance, and direction in tutoring work.
  • Conduct in‑person or online tutoring sessions as needed.
  • Notify the Academic Support Center director if problems arise or assistance is required.
  • Work cooperatively with Academic Support Center staff to deliver a cohesive tutoring program and respond professionally to diverse student needs.
  • Participate in all tutoring training sessions and staff meetings as requested.
  • Respect students’ rights to confidentiality and follow legal guidelines regarding the dispersal of information.
  • Represent the tutoring program within the college community.
  • Submit weekly reports and monthly timesheets to the Academic Support Center director as requested.
  • Accept tutoring assignments at one or more of the following locations: L.L. Polk campus (Polkton), Old Charlotte Highway campus (Monroe), and Lockhart‑Taylor Center (Wadesboro).
  • Complete all tutor training activities and departmental staff meetings scheduled by the Academic Support Center director.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Ensure no tutoring activities include doing a student’s work, providing copies of exams or quizzes, or writing papers; provide guidance only.
  • Tutor a maximum of 27.5 hours per week.
  • Ensure any individual student is tutored no more than three hours per week.
  • Conduct face‑to‑face sessions only at the approved SPCC locations and never on weekends.
  • Deliver at least four tutoring presentations to SPCC classes at the beginning of each semester, with dates and times approved by the Academic Support Center director.
Required Qualifications
  • A Bachelor’s degree in the subject area of tutoring or a closely related field.
  • A grade of B or higher in all courses and/or academic subject areas for which tutoring services will be offered.
  • A cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher in all post‑secondary coursework.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Teaching or tutoring experience, particularly in post‑secondary courses.
  • Relevant work experience that demonstrates knowledge of the content or the ability to work with students and communicate ideas effectively.
