The primary goal of the teacher is to provide specialized instruction and adaptation of the general/special education curriculum in an individualized program for students. The teacher functions as the case manager for students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and collects data to oversee their compliance.
- Comply with timelines, laws, and regulations related to district, state, and federal policies and procedures.
- Develop and implement an instructional plan that aligns with school and system-wide curricular goals and the students’ Individual Education Program.
- Develop, implement, and update Individual Education Programs (IEPs) for students with disabilities using diagnostic information from tests and other assessment procedures.
- Plan and implement non‑academic instruction in areas such as social skills, toilet training, and community‑based instruction.
- Provide direct special education instruction to identified students.
- Document and share student progress on goals and objectives, accommodations, service time, and discipline/suspensions; collect and analyze data and monitor progress.
- Employ a variety of teaching methods to meet student needs; adapt or develop materials as required.
- Monitor student behavior; maintain discipline; de‑escalate inappropriate behaviors; teach appropriate behavioral strategies.
- Use CPI training and an understanding of the function of behavior to prevent and intervene safely, including restraint when part of a written plan.
- Assist students with personal and self‑help needs such as eating, toileting, and other essential tasks they cannot perform independently.
- Communicate with parents regarding their children’s educational progress via written progress reports.
- Act as a case coordinator for assigned students; consult with community caregivers, school support professionals, and parents to better understand and meet student needs.
- Maintain student records in accordance with North Carolina’s Procedures Governing Programs and Services for Children with Disabilities and comply with state and federal education statutes.
- Participate in building‑level meetings and special education meetings as directed by administrators.
- Treat all students fairly and equitably, and interact effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, and community members.
- Follow a plan for professional development and demonstrate evidence of growth.
- Maintain basic files and records.
- Understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships as needed for work assignments.
- Perform other related work as required.
- Coordinate and direct the activities of the Instructional Assistant, if applicable.
- Possess a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- Hold a North Carolina Professional Educator’s License or be eligible to obtain one.
- Strong background in North Carolina Standard Course of Study/Common Core and Essential Standards.
- Proper NC certification preferred.
- Ability to maintain basic files and records, understand and follow verbal and written instructions, and establish effective working relationships.
