General Statement of JobUnder general supervision, performs a variety of technical and clerical tasks to assist a teacher. Supports the lead teacher, meets students' needs, and ensures quality instruction. Provides one‑on‑one assistance with academics and behavior, leads small group activities, and assists with housekeeping and clerical duties. Reports to a Principal and/or lead teacher.
Responsibilities- Assist teacher with instruction execution and evaluate effectiveness.
- Continuously monitor student safety and well‑being, encourage self‑esteem, and promote independence.
- Monitor behavior, maintain classroom discipline, record time‑outs, in‑class suspensions, assist with crisis prevention, and restrain students as needed.
- Provide one‑on‑one academic assistance, reinforce instructions, conduct short study‑skill sessions.
- Maintain standardized records and documentation of student progress.
- Perform general housekeeping duties and repair/maintenance tasks related to school equipment.
- Handle clerical duties: grade papers, score tests, check attendance, make copies, develop classroom displays and instructional materials, operate audiovisual equipment, order supplies, maintain class files.
- Participate in staff development workshops and other related work as required.
- Willingness and ability to drive a school bus when needed.
- Perform any other duties as may be required by the immediate supervisor.
- High school diploma or equivalent; alternatively hold or be working toward an Associate Degree or higher in birth‑through kindergarten, child development, early childhood education, or a related field. Progress must be documented with a minimum of six semester hours per year.
- Possess or obtain a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential, or be working toward it.
- Complete minimum 15 hours of annual in‑service professional development.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects of light weight; ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills, ability to give and receive instructions.
- Reading and writing proficiency for routine correspondence and instructional materials.
- Adaptability under stress; ability to manage classroom emergencies and safety procedures.
- Knowledge of classroom routines, student handbook rules, emergency procedures, organizational principles, and curriculum.
- Ability to motivate students, maintain a clean environment, perform clerical duties, operate office machines, keep files, follow oral and written instructions, and establish effective working relationships.
Applicants must obtain a valid bus certification and license to drive a morning or evening route when needed. This includes the additional 40 hours for custodial duties and overtime pay.
