Primary
Purpose:
Assist special education teachers in providing physical and instructional support to students with disabilities, implementing classroom programs, and managing student behavior under the supervision of the principal and certified teacher.
- Help teachers prepare instructional materials and classroom displays.
- Maintain a neat and orderly classroom and assist with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
- Keep administrative records and prepare required reports.
- Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
- Assist students with physical disabilities, including transfers, lifting, positioning, personal care, feeding, bathroom and hygiene needs.
- Help manage student behavior, including intervening in crises and restraining disruptive or dangerous behavior.
- Assist students in developing motor skills and completing instructional exercises assigned by teachers.
- Supervise students during school day activities including lunchroom, bus, and playground duty.
- Keep the teacher informed of any special needs or problems of individual students.
- Maintain confidentiality and participate in staff development, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.
- Act as bus driver, bus monitor or substitute bus monitor, depending on needs, with overtime pay for hours above 40 per week.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Education or Certification:
High school diploma or GED. - College Credit:
Either a 2‑year associate degree or a minimum of 48 semester hours of college coursework. - Required Bus Certification and License to drive a morning or evening routine.
- Clearance:
Criminal background check and references. - Experience:
Some experience working with children.
- Ability to work with children with disabilities.
- Follow verbal and written instructions.
- Effective communication.
- Knowledge of general office equipment.
- Empathetic attitude toward disabled students.
- Work cooperatively and willingly learn specialized instructional/management techniques.
- Maintain emotional control under stress; frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, pulling, heavy lifting.
- Ample on‑the‑job training and CPI certification as required.

Job RequirementsAssociate’s Degree or 48 approved semester hours from a regionally accredited institution.
