Job Description

Middle School Classroom Teacher (Grades 6-8)

Position Purpose
Under the general supervision of the School Principal, facilitate student success and growth in academic and interpersonal skills through implementing district‑approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; addressing specific educational needs of individual students; creating a flexible, safe, optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents, and administration regarding progress, expectations, goals, etc.

Essential Performance Responsibilities
  • Develop and administer middle school curriculum consistent with district goals.
  • Promote a safe, conducive classroom environment for individualized and small group instruction.
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials; translate into learning experiences to maximize instructional time.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student learning; modify instruction to fit individual needs, including special needs, and provide small group instruction as needed.
  • Instruct students in responsible citizenship and other subject matters specified by law, plus administrative regulations and procedures of Iredell‑Statesville Schools.
  • Continue professional development by attending seminars, workshops, professional meetings, or conducting research.
  • Organize and maintain accurate record‑keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement, and attendance per district procedures and applicable laws.
  • Encourage parental involvement and communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ensure student conduct conforms to school standards and district policies, establishing and maintaining behavior standards for a functional learning atmosphere.
  • Coordinate with middle school professional staff members, especially within grade level and specific subjects, to evaluate and assess curriculum; participate in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Select and requisition appropriate books, instructional aids, and supplies; maintain inventory records.
  • Supervise students during off‑classroom activities throughout the school day, including transportation activities.
  • Administer standardized tests in accordance with district testing programs.
Additional Duties

Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent, within the scope of this position.

Equipment

Standard office equipment such as personal computer, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.

Travel Requirements

Travel to district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, including differentiated instruction based on learning styles.
  • Knowledge of middle school curriculum and concepts, including all subject matters taught.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self‑evaluation for performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others in the course of work.
Physical and Mental Demands

Works in standard office and school building environments.

Qualifications Profile
  • Certification/License:
    North Carolina certification as a Middle School Teacher.
  • Motor Vehicle Operator’s License or ability to provide own transportation.
Education

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in an education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.

Experience

Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.
