Primary Purpose
:
Assist special‑education teachers with the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities, support classroom programs, behavior management, and instructional delivery. Work under the principal’s supervision and a certified teacher’s direction.
Education / Certification
- High school diploma or GED
- Two‑year associate degree, or
minimum 48 semester hours of college coursework - Possible requirement: bus certification and license to drive a morning or evening route. Hours for bus duties will be paid at overtime rate for 40 or more hours per week.
Special Knowledge / Skills
- Ability to work with children with disabilities
- Follow verbal and written instructions
- Effective communication
- Knowledge of general office equipment
- Some experience working with children
Instructional Support
- Assist teachers in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays.
- Help maintain classroom organization.
- Assist with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
- Help keep administrative records and prepare required reports.
- Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
Student Management
- Assist students with physical disabilities, including transfers, lifting, and positioning.
- Provide personal care (feeding, bathroom, hygiene) as needed.
- Manage student behavior, intervening in crises and restraining disruptive or dangerous behavior.
- Develop knowledge of each student’s medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
- Work with individual students or small groups on motor skill development and instructional exercises.
- Supervise students during the school day, in lunchroom, on bus, and at playground.
- Inform the teacher of any special needs or problems of individual students.
Other Duties
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Participate in staff development, faculty meetings, and special events.
- Possibility of bus monitoring or substitute bus monitoring with additional pay.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Bus Driver Requirements:
The role may include bus driving duties. Off‑condition, the applicant must obtain bus certification and license to drive a route. These duties will be paid at overtime rate.
Wheelchair lift, ramp, computer, copier, audiovisual equipment.
Working ConditionsIntense emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, pulling, heavy lifting. Biological exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Potential requirement:
Crisis Prevention Institute training and certification. - Empathetic attitude toward disabled students.
- Cooperate positively with others.
- Willingness to learn specialized techniques.
- Effective communication with students, parents, and staff while maintaining confidentiality.
- Follow detailed written and oral instructions.
- Drive a school bus route when needed.
- Possibility of substitute bus monitor.
- Associate degree or 48 approved semester hours from regionally accredited institution.
- Clearance: criminal background check and references required.
- Bus certification/license may be required.
