ESL Teacher

REPORTS TO: Principal

SUPERVISES: May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.

PURPOSE: To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.

• Management of Instructional Time: Prepare materials and supplies before each lesson; start class quickly; keep students on task; maintain high time‑on‑task.
• Management of Student Behavior: Establish and enforce rules for participation, verbal, movement; monitor behavior; address inappropriate behavior promptly and respectfully.
• Instructional Presentation: Review previous material; introduce objectives; deliver clear, engaging instruction; provide examples; ask appropriate questions; pace lessons effectively; transition smoothly; summarize main points.
• Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance: Set clear standards; circulate during work; use oral, written, and other products to check progress; ask clear questions one at a time.
• Instructional Feedback: Provide timely feedback on in‑class and out‑of‑class work; affirm correct responses; probe or give clues for incorrect ones.
• Facilitating Instruction: Use compatible instructional plans; incorporate diagnostic data; maintain accurate records; align objectives, strategies, assessments with student needs; utilize resources.
• Interacting Within the Educational Environment: Treat all students fairly; collaborate with students, coworkers, parents, and community.
• Performing Non‑Instructional Duties: Execute assigned non‑instructional tasks; follow laws, policies, and professional development plans.

Degree in education or a related area that qualifies for licensure by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
