Instructional Specialist

Wilkes County Schools provides a robust variety of state and local benefit offerings that include but are not limited to health insurance, annual leave, sick leave, holiday pay, dental insurance, vision insurance, life insurance, state pension plan, and other ancillary benefits. Benefit eligibility is determined by job status and percentage of employment. In addition, Wilkes County Schools offers a local salary supplement of 5%.

Nature of Work

The instructional specialist works under general supervision to perform a variety of professional tasks to assist in the coordination of the curriculum used in the school district. The position is responsible for interpreting curriculum changes, updating teachers and principals of those changes, and ensuring instruction is aligned with student needs and curriculum goals. This position also works as a mentor to beginning teachers.

Duties

and Responsibilities
  • Facilitates implementation of curriculum.
  • Communicates changes in the North Carolina standards to teachers and principals; develops and implements curricular guides to facilitate instruction.
  • Coordinates and provides on‑going staff development opportunities at the district and school levels to communicate state, district and school objectives.
  • Meets with teachers during grade level planning to assist with curriculum alignment, instructional strategies, data analysis, and state, district and school assessments.
  • Facilitates PLC meetings with teachers to review student data and to adjust instruction as needed including determining appropriate inventions.
  • Stays abreast of research‑based instructional strategies by attending professional development sessions and reading professional educational research.
  • Assists teachers with lesson plan formats, lesson planning, and lesson plan reviews.
  • Provides support to teachers in their classroom through coaching, modeling, and mentoring.
  • Provides mentor support to beginning teachers.
  • Meets regularly with principal to diagnose and determine school needs.
  • Works towards meeting identified district and school improvement goals.
  • Creates positive relationships with teachers and administrators.
  • Helps schools interpret the instructional program to parents and the general public.
  • Performs other related work as required.
Qualifications
  • Valid North Carolina Teaching Certificate required
  • Master’s Degree preferred
  • Minimum of five years teaching experience required
  • Record of positive classroom experiences
  • Knowledge of North Carolina curriculum
  • Ability to conduct professional development for teachers and administrators
  • Ability to disaggregate, interpret, and analyze assessment data
  • Success working collaboratively with colleagues
  • Communicate effectively with administrators, principals, teachers, and parents both orally and in writing
  • Considerable knowledge of the county and school board policies, procedures, and standards regarding K‑12 education
Essential Job Functions
  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment including computers, copiers, SMART Boards, document cameras, etc.
  • Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, forms, statements, etc.
  • Requires the ability to prepare correspondence, reports, forms, evaluations, statements, etc. using prescribed formats.
  • Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form.
