Position: Extension Agent, 4-H Youth Development (Assistant, Associate, or Full)
Location: Pittsboro

Position Overview

The 4-H Extension Agent has primary responsibility for planning, executing, and evaluating comprehensive 4‑H programs that meet the needs of the county population. The role supports the mission of 4‑H to develop youth and adults, enabling them to realize their full potential through research‑based, non‑formal, hands‑on educational experiences. The agent provides leadership for the entire 4‑H program, determining programming needs, planning, marketing, implementing, and evaluating programs.

The position also involves training 4‑H volunteers, supporting 4‑H clubs, and providing opportunities for school‑based 4‑H programs.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure principles of positive youth development are applied across the program, including qualified adult leadership at each activity, appropriate curriculum, and proper evaluation of program impacts.
  • Build relationships in the county to recruit, train, manage, and reward volunteer leaders who guide 4‑H clubs and support program planning and promotion.
  • Raise funds to support youth participation in local, district, state, and national events, including fundraising for volunteer development and management.
  • Manage a county‑wide 4‑H advisory council comprising alumni, volunteer leaders, youth, and county leaders to identify programmatic needs and champion 4‑H in the community.
  • Develop a marketing/recruiting program that attracts youth and volunteers from all sectors of the county to achieve desired programmatic impact.
  • Administer the program: maintain accurate records, ensure compliance with local, state, and national regulations, and manage finances and 4‑H club accounts.
  • Qualifications and Requirements
    • Bachelor’s degree with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 overall or 3.0 in child or youth development (waived for NCCE Program Associates with a bachelor’s). A bachelor’s with at least one‑half of a master’s curriculum at 3.0 GPA or a master’s degree in child or youth development (or related field) is acceptable.
    • Experience working in Extension or teaching in varied communities, with an understanding that a master’s degree will be pursued.
    • Ability to work independently, manage time and resources, and operate computer tools (MS Office, Google Workspace).
    • Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to handle multiple demands, set priorities, travel, and work after‑hours and weekends as needed.
    • Capability to network with community partners, maintain relationships, and lift and carry training supplies and equipment.
    • Valid North Carolina driver’s license (commercial license not required).
    Preferred Experience and Skills
    • Master’s degree in child and youth development, education, or related field.
    • Experience developing and/or managing community gardens for youth programming.
    • Experience planning programs in varied communities, including urban settings.
    • Team‑work experience and familiarity with mass media, marketing, and presentations.
    • Leadership, citizenship, budget management, and public relations skills.
    • Recruiting, training, and supervising volunteer leaders.
    • Grant writing experience to support programs.

    Employment Details

    Work schedule:

    40 hours per week; frequently includes evenings, nights, and weekends. Position type: 12‑Month recurring, Full‑time Permanent, 1.0 FTE.
