Job Description- Reports to: Principal, Federal Programs Director
- Purpose: To plan, organize and present Cherokee Language and Culture instruction to help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development. Expand and increase the effectiveness of the Indian Education program by promoting awareness of Cherokee language, culture, history, and traditions.
- Cherokee Language and Culture Instruction
- Management of instructional time and student behavior
- Promote pride in our home
- Promote cultural awareness of students as it relates to Cherokee culture
- Promote understanding of our region through a focus on the multicultural elements of Appalachia
- Develop a mentoring program that meets with the students throughout the semester to track academic progress
- Coordinate forum with key members from the tribe to identify at‑risk behaviors, develop goals to help Native American students become more successful, and identify resources to promote successful students
- Participate and coordinate with Swain High Careteam weekly
- Coordinate with EBCI Education Office
- Track the progress of Native American students closely throughout the year, including the collection of Impact Aid forms and 504 forms
- Facilitate Native American cultural activities throughout the year in collaboration with Swain County High School
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Non-Exempt 10-month Position
SalarySalary in accordance with the NC State Teacher Salary Schedule
Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job FunctionsPhysical Requirements: Must be able to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools such as computers, copiers, typewriters, calculators, pencils, scissors, equipment for children with special needs, etc. Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Due to amount of time spent standing and/or walking, physical requirements are consistent with those for Light Work.
