Job Description

Job Title: Exceptional Children (EC) Resource Assistant

Location: South Macon Elementary School

Position Summary

The Exceptional Children (EC) Resource Assistant supports licensed EC teachers in providing instructional, behavioral, and personal assistance to students with disabilities. Working under the direction of the EC teacher and school administration, the Resource Assistant helps implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), promotes student independence, and fosters a safe, inclusive learning environment where all students can succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.

Key Responsibilities

Student Support

  • Provide instructional support to students individually and in small groups under the supervision of the EC teacher.
  • Assist students in completing classroom assignments, activities, and assessments.
  • Reinforce academic concepts and learning strategies introduced by the teacher.
  • Encourage student independence while providing appropriate levels of assistance.
  • Support students in developing communication, social, organizational, and life skills.

Instructional Assistance

  • Assist in implementing accommodations and modifications outlined in students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Prepare instructional materials, classroom resources, and adaptive learning tools.
  • Monitor student progress and provide feedback to the supervising teacher.
  • Help maintain accurate records related to student participation and progress as directed.

Behavioral Support

  • Reinforce positive behavior expectations and classroom routines.
  • Implement behavior intervention strategies under the guidance of certified staff.
  • Assist with de-escalation techniques while maintaining a safe learning environment.
  • Promote respectful, supportive, and inclusive interactions among students.

Personal Care & Student Safety

  • Assist students with mobility, positioning, feeding, toileting, hygiene, or other personal care needs as required by their IEP or health plan.
  • Monitor student safety during classroom activities, transitions, lunch, recess, field trips, and other school-related activities.
  • Follow district procedures for student confidentiality, health, and safety.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Work collaboratively with EC teachers, general education teachers, administrators, therapists, counselors, and related service providers.
  • Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and training as assigned.
  • Maintain positive and professional relationships with students, families, and staff.
  • Communicate student concerns promptly to the supervising teacher or administrator.

Classroom & Program Support

  • Assist with classroom organization and maintenance of instructional materials and equipment.
  • Supervise students during transitions and non-instructional times as assigned.
  • Perform clerical duties related to the EC program as directed.
  • Support inclusion opportunities within the general education setting when appropriate.

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to work effectively with students with diverse learning, behavioral, and physical needs.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal directions.
  • Ability to lift, position, or assist students as needed in accordance with district procedures.

Preferred

  • Associate degree or completion of coursework related to education, child development, or a related field.
  • Previous experience working with children or individuals with disabilities.
  • Experience in an educational or special education setting.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Understanding of child development and diverse learning needs.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students.
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing student needs and classroom environments.
  • Basic technology skills, including Google Workspace and educational software.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive educational environment.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and sit for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift, transfer, or assist students and equipment as required.
  • Ability to accompany students throughout the school campus and during school activities.
  • Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations.

Terms of Employment

  • Salary and benefits according to the Macon County Schools Board of Education salary schedule and applicable state regulations.
  • Work schedule follows the approved school calendar.
  • Reports to the assigned Exceptional Children Teacher and School Principal.
