Under general supervision, performs a variety of technical and clerical tasks in assisting a teacher. Employee may perform a wide range of tasks in order to support the efforts of the lead teacher, meet the needs of all students, and ensure the provision of quality instruction for all students. Employee provides one‑on‑one assistance with academics and behavioral problems and may lead small group activities.
Employee assists lead teacher with general housekeeping and clerical duties. Reports to a Principal and/or lead teacher.
- Assist teacher with executing instruction and evaluating its effectiveness.
- Constantly monitor the safety and well‑being of students, encouraging self‑esteem and helping students become increasingly independent.
- Monitor student behavior and help maintain discipline; record time‑out and in‑class suspensions; assist with crisis prevention; restrain students as needed.
- Assist students with learning; reinforce and clarify instructions; conduct short sessions on improving study skills; provide one‑on‑one assistance as needed.
- Maintain standardized records and documentation concerning the progress of students.
- Perform general housekeeping duties, manage classroom equipment, and carry out repair and maintenance tasks.
- Carry out clerical duties: maintain records of student progress, develop and file incident reports, grade papers and score tests, check daily attendance, make copies, develop classroom displays and instructional materials, maintain and operate audiovisual equipment, order supplies, and maintain class files.
- Feed students, attend to toileting as required, and assist with any other tasks students cannot perform independently.
- Participate in staff development workshops.
- Perform other related work as required.
- High School diploma and a minimum of 48 hours of college‑level coursework.
- Minimum GPA of 2.0.
- Physical:
Use classroom tools and equipment; exert negligible force to lift, carry, push, pull; meet light work standards. - Data Conception:
Compare and judge observable characteristics of data, people or things. - Interpersonal Communication:
Speak and signal to convey information; receive instructions and directions. - Language Ability:
Read and prepare correspondence, reports, forms; prepare instructional materials. - Intelligence:
Apply rational systems to solve practical problems; interpret instructions in various formats. - Verbal Aptitude:
Record and deliver information; explain procedures; follow oral and written instructions; communicate effectively in standard English. - Numerical Aptitude:
Use mathematical formulas; add, subtract; use decimals and percentages. - Form/Spatial Aptitude:
Inspect items for correct length, width and shape. - Motor Coordination:
Coordinate hands and eyes in using office equipment. - Manual Dexterity:
Handle office machines; maintain eye/hand/foot coordination. - Color Discrimination:
Distinguish colors and shades. - Interpersonal Temperament:
Deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions; adapt under stress. - Physical Communication:
Talk, hear, and use telephone.
Skills and Abilities
- General knowledge of activities performed by the lead teacher and daily classroom routines.
- General knowledge of student handbook rules and emergency procedures.
- General knowledge of principles of organization and administration.
- Some knowledge of the curriculum for the grade.
- Constantly monitor student safety, especially during inclusive activities.
- Motivate students.
- Maintain a clean and orderly environment; perform general clerical duties.
- Maintain order and discipline in the classroom; operate common office machines; maintain basic files and records; follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships.
