Exceptional Children Teacher NATURE OF WORK
Under general supervision, provides special education services to students identified as disabled in accordance with state and federal regulations. Work involves developing and implementing the Individual Education Program in classroom settings that are compatible with the student’s age and developmental level. The EC teacher is responsible for developing lesson plans, adapting materials and designing activities to assist EC students develop appropriate academic, behavioral, and social skills and to meet their IEP goals.
The teacher is responsible for monitoring students’ progress and for maintaining EC records in compliance with state and federal guidelines.
- Develop and implement an instructional plan compatible with the school and system-wide curricular goals and the students’ Individual Education Program.
- Develop, implement, and update Individual Education Programs (IEP) for students with disabilities using diagnostic information from assessments.
- Provide direct special education instruction to identified students.
- Employ a variety of teaching methods and adapt or modify materials as needed.
- Monitor student behavior; maintain discipline; deescalate inappropriate behaviors; teach appropriate behavioral strategies; restrain students when necessary and record/reports restraints.
- Assist disabled students with personal and self‑help needs such as eating, toileting and other essential tasks.
- Communicate with parents regarding educational progress via periodic written progress reports.
- Act as case coordinator for assigned students and consult with community caregivers, school support professionals, and parents to meet student needs.
- Maintain student records in accordance with North Carolina’s Procedures Governing Program and Services for Children with Disabilities and comply with state and federal statutes.
- Treat all students fairly and equitably; interact effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, and community.
- Follow a professional development plan and demonstrate evidence of growth.
- Complete random moment-in-time studies as required by MAC program guidelines.
- Perform related work as required.
Bachelor’s degree in special education with at least one area of disability as a teacher. Must be licensed in North Carolina.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS- Use a variety of equipment and classroom tools such as computers, copiers, calculators, pencils, scissors and equipment for children with special needs.

- Read correspondence, reports, handbooks, forms, lists, etc.
- Prepare correspondence, simple reports, forms, instructional materials using prescribed format.
- Apply logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; interpret technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form; handle abstract and concrete variables.
- Record and deliver information; explain procedures; follow oral and written instructions; communicate effectively in technical or professional languages including medical, legal, and counseling terminology.
- Dealing with people beyond giving instructions; adapt to stress and emergency situations.
- Talk and hear.
- Constantly monitor safety and well‑being of students, especially during inclusive activities.
- Motivate students.
