The Dr. M.T. Pope House Museum is hiring a museum educator. The position includes handling daily operations and programming tasks associated with the Dr. M.T. Pope House Museum, along with working on a variety of projects from educational programming, tours, research, event management, and more. While the position’s primary work site will be at the Dr. M.T. Pope House Museum, there is opportunity to work at additional sites in the Museum Section:
John P. "Top" Greene African American Cultural Center and the City of Raleigh Museum.
- Opening and closing the facility
- Public and group tours
- Field trip programming for school groups
- Public program and event management
- Assistance with exhibit development
- Other duties as assigned
Weekend and occasional evening work is required. Approximately 20 hours per week.
High School Diploma required. Effective oral and written communication required.
A BA in history, public history, or related museum experience preferred. A working knowledge of historic time periods and historic research methods.
Applicants must have availability during the weekday, weekend and occasional evenings.
About the Dr. M.T. Pope House Museum:The Dr. M.T. Pope House offers a glimpse into the life of one of Raleigh’s most intriguing citizens, Dr. Manassa Thomas Pope. Dr. Pope was a graduate of Leonard Medical School and one of the first licensed African American doctors in North Carolina. He was also the only African American to run for mayor of a Southern capital during the Jim Crow Era.
The house features original furnishings and historical artifacts that give insight into the lives of this remarkable man, his wives, Lydia and Delia, and daughters, Evelyn and Ruth Pope.
