Qualified Assistant for Law Enforcement Training Programs

College of The Albemarle, located in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, is the state's first community college, founded in 1961. We strive to transform lives by inspiring and empowering individuals and communities of our seven-county service area. Through our four locations, we provide quality college transfer and career and technical education to residents in northeast North Carolina.

The Qualified Assistant for Law Enforcement Training Programs supports the administration, coordination, and delivery of Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET), Advanced Law Enforcement Training, in-service training, and related criminal justice education programs in accordance with the standards established by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS).

The Qualified Assistant reports directly to the School Director for Law Enforcement Training Programs or designee and serves as the BLET Director Designee, as assigned. This position assists with instructional coordination, compliance monitoring, instructor support, course documentation, facility operations, and training delivery. The Qualified Assistant may assume operational responsibility for BLET programs in the absence of the School Director.

Examples of Duties
  • Assist with the planning, scheduling, coordination, administration, and delivery of BLET, advanced law enforcement, in-service, and continuing education training programs.
  • Support compliance with North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission rules, regulations, curriculum standards, and reporting requirements, including applicable provisions of 12 NCAC 09B.
  • Coordinate and maintain course records, attendance documentation, testing materials, certifications, evaluations, inventories, and required reports in accordance with Commission standards, NCCCS requirements, and institutional procedures.
  • Coordinate instructor schedules, classroom assignments, training facilities, equipment usage, and related instructional logistics.
  • Provide instructors with current Commission-approved lesson plans, instructional materials, and required course documentation.
  • Assist with instructional delivery, instructor oversight, student evaluations, testing administration, and practical skills assessments in accordance with Commission standards.
  • Assist with reporting course completions and required documentation to the appropriate regulatory agencies and accrediting bodies.
  • Serve as the BLET Director Designee and assume responsibility for program operations during the absence of the School Director, as assigned.
  • Assist with the recruitment, onboarding, and coordination of instructors who meet required certification and credentialing standards.
  • Support communication and collaboration with local, state, and regional law enforcement agencies to identify training and workforce development needs.
  • Provide classroom, practical skills, and continuing education instruction as assigned.
  • Support daily training operations through facility access, equipment setup, inventory management, supply stocking, light maintenance duties, and maintenance of training resources.
  • Attend required meetings, training sessions, graduations, professional development activities, and Commission-related events.
  • Maintain confidentiality, professionalism, and compliance with college policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications

To be eligible to serve as a Qualified Assistant, an applicant shall meet the requirements established under 12 NCAC 09B.0504, including:

  • Hold a current General Instructor Certification issued by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Completion of the Instructor Training Orientation presented by the North Carolina Justice Academy related to instructor training delivery and student evaluations, when applicable.
  • Proficiency in standard office software and basic computer applications.

Preferred:

  • Associate degree from a regionally accredited college or university in Criminal Justice, Public Safety, or a related field.
  • Four years of practical experience as a criminal justice officer, administrator, trainer, or specialist in a criminal justice or public safety-related field.
  • One year of experience administering or coordinating education or training programs in public safety or related fields.
  • Additional law enforcement, instructional, or specialized public safety certifications.
  • Current certifications in Physical Fitness, Law Enforcement Driver Training, CCT, HAZMAT or related instructional areas.
  • Knowledge of the North Carolina Community College System and its mission.
