The 4-H Extension Agent is an employee of North Carolina State University and a professional educator. The Agent plans, executes, and evaluates comprehensive 4-H programs to meet the needs of the county population and supports the 4-H mission to develop youth and adults. The agent collaborates with colleagues in North Carolina Cooperative Extension and county leaders, guided by the university’s philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures.
The incumbent will provide leadership for the total 4-H program, determine programming needs, plan, market, implement, and evaluate programs; train 4-H volunteers; support 4-H clubs; and provide opportunities for school-based 4-H programs.
Responsibilities- Develop, implement, and evaluate a community-based 4-H program teaching life skills through project, special interest, after school, community clubs, and school enrichment programs.
- Plan, promote, and attend 4-H residential and summer camps and events to develop life skills and self-esteem.
- Provide opportunities for youth to participate in events beyond the county at district, state, or national levels.
- Recruit, train, and supervise youth and adult volunteers representative of the county population; ensure compliance with Client Protection guidelines.
- Manage a county-wide 4-H advisory council to identify programmatic needs and champion 4-H community impact.
- Fundraise to support youth participation and volunteer development; manage related grants and resources.
- Develop a marketing/recruiting program to attract youth and volunteers from diverse sectors.
- Maintain program administration: accurate records, compliance with local, state, and national regulations including programming with minors, financial management, club charters, and USDA-NIFA/IRS compliance.
- Bachelor’s degree in child or youth development, family and consumer sciences, or related field; minimum GPA as specified; relevant coursework or degree requirements as per the NC State guidelines.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable personal transportation; NC driver’s license required within 60 days of hire.
- Personal attributes: strong written and oral communication, ability to plan, implement, market, and evaluate educational programs; willingness to work as part of a team and support a total Extension program; ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Experience in volunteer recruitment/training, grant development, and program development preferred; related Master’s degree preferred; grant writing experience preferred.
- Willingness to travel for trainings and programs, including overnight and weekend commitments as needed.
Work Schedule:
Monday - Friday, 8:30 am – 5 pm; evenings and weekends as required. Dare County location with responsibilities for Dare County 4-H programs.
