English Teacher (Grades 9-12)

Hoke County Schools is seeking an English Teacher for the  school year. The position reports to the designated principal and is full time (10 months) with a salary based on the NC State Salary Schedule. This role is exempt.

The English Teacher will:

  • Cooperate in the development of annual school objectives and plan an instructional program incorporating these objectives.
  • Incorporate learner objectives compatible with the subject, grade level, established curriculum, and student needs.
  • Assess the effectiveness of the instructional program.
  • Maintain knowledge of subject areas and child growth and development.
  • Attend staff development, professional learning communities, and other relevant training.
  • Stay abreast of and implement current research practices for increasing student achievement.
  • Ensure instruction, materials, and procedures are appropriate for the subject and student needs.
  • Encourage student, parent, and community involvement in daily instructional activities.
  • Collaborate with parents, employees, and community to create a supportive approach to reaching students.
  • Assess individual student abilities to devise techniques accommodating differences in learning rates, styles, and ability levels.
  • Monitor individual student achievement, employ various teaching methods, and provide remediation as required.
  • Implement professional classroom management techniques to maintain a suitable instructional environment.
  • Make use of community resources, student talent, volunteers, and other school personnel to enhance the instructional program.
  • Demonstrate respect for the dignity and worth of all students, value cultural differences, and maintain communication with parents.
  • Accept responsibility for non-instructional duties as assigned by the principal, superintendent, school board, or other administrative personnel.
  • Conduct self in a manner promoting a safe, secure, and orderly environment, fostering a climate of respect at the school.
  • Report acts of violence to the principal.

The teacher's primary functions are:

  • To direct the growth and development of pupils.
  • To assume responsibilities toward the safe, efficient operation, and improvement of the total school program.
  • To teach the required curriculum as adopted by the Board.
  • Additional responsibilities may include bus duty, cafeteria supervision, playground duty, supervision of extra-curricular activities, attending professional development, service on committees, and all other duties as assigned by the Superintendent, principal, or other supervisors.

Physical and cognitive requirements include:

  • Prepare, read, and comprehend job-related forms, reports, spreadsheets, maps, plans, records, documentation, and correspondence in all languages required by the job.
  • Understand and conform to rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style.
  • Speak with poise, voice control, and confidence.
  • Respond adequately to inquiries or complaints.
  • Write using standard conventions in all languages required by the job.
  • Apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.
  • Communicate effectively and efficiently in all languages required by the job using any communication device or system required.
  • Use/interpret job-related terminology, mathematical formulas, and functions effectively and efficiently.
  • Deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
  • Perform under stress, deal with persons acting under stress, and adapt to emergency situations.
  • Be sensitive to cultural differences among individuals and groups of persons.
  • Operate a motor vehicle.
  • Operate/use a variety of automated office machines and other office equipment.
  • Operate/use a variety of printing/graphic arts machines.
  • Operate/use a variety of audiovisual/electronic machines and devices.
  • Operate/use a variety of communication machines/equipment/devices.
  • Operate/use a variety of job-specific machines/equipment.
