Elementary Music Teacher

Yancey County Schools Blue Ridge Elementary School, Burnsville, North Carolina.

Must hold a valid NC Teaching License in Music K-12 (800) and be highly qualified. This is an itinerant position serving multiple schools. The position will remain posted until filled.

Reports To: Principal

Supervises: May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.

Purpose: To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Management of Instructional Time: The teacher has materials, supplies, and equipment for each lesson ready at the start of the lesson or instructional activity; gets the class started quickly; gets students on task quickly at the beginning of each lesson; maintains a high level of student time-on-task.
  • Management of Student Behavior: The teacher has established a set of rules and procedures that govern routine administrative matters, verbal participation, talk, and movement during activities; frequently monitors behavior and stops inappropriate behavior promptly and consistently while maintaining student dignity.
  • Instructional Presentation: The teacher begins the lesson with a review of previous material, introduces objectives, speaks fluently, uses concepts understandable to students, provides examples and demonstrations, assigns tasks, asks appropriate questions, conducts the lesson at a brisk pace, manages transitions, and summarizes key points at the end.
  • Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance: The teacher maintains clear standards and due dates, circulates during class work, uses oral and written methods to check progress, and poses questions clearly.
  • Instructional Feedback: The teacher provides feedback on in-class and out-of-class work, affirms correct responses, and offers sustaining feedback after incorrect or no responses.
  • Facilitating Instruction: The teacher develops an instructional plan aligned with school and system-wide curricular goals, uses diagnostic information to revise objectives, maintains accurate records, and employs available resources to support instruction.
  • Interacting Within the Educational Environment: The teacher treats all students fairly, interacts effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, and the community.
  • Performing Non-Instructional Duties: The teacher carries out non‑instructional duties as assigned, adheres to laws and policies, and demonstrates professional development growth.

Minimum Training and Experience

Degree in education or in a related area that qualifies for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

Physical Requirements: Must be able to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools, lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects with negligible force; consistent with Light Work.

Data Conception: Ability to compare and judge functional characteristics of data, people or objects.

Interpersonal Communication: Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey information; receive instructions and directions.

Language Ability: Ability to read and prepare written communication and instructional materials.

Intelligence: Ability to apply logical and scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions.

Verbal Aptitude: Ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, and follow oral and written instructions.
