Job Description

REPORTS TO: Principal

SUPERVISES: May coordinate and direct activities of teacher assistants.

PURPOSE: To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • MAJOR FUNCTION – Management of Instructional Time: The teacher has materials, supplies, and equipment ready at the start of each lesson, gets the class started quickly, gets students on task quickly, and maintains a high level of student time‑on‑task.
  • MAJOR FUNCTION – Management of Student Behavior: The teacher has established rules and procedures for routine administrative matters, verbal participation, and classroom movement, monitors behavior during whole‑class, small‑group, and seat‑work activities, stops inappropriate behavior promptly and consistently, and maintains the dignity of the student.
  • MAJOR FUNCTION – Instructional Presentation: The teacher begins the lesson with a review of previous materials, introduces objectives, speaks fluently and precisely, presents concepts in an understandable language, provides relevant examples, assigns tasks that students handle successfully, asks appropriate questions, conducts lessons at a brisk pace, transitions smoothly, and summarizes the main points at the end.
  • MAJOR FUNCTION – Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance: The teacher maintains clear standards and due dates, circulates during class work to check performance, uses oral and written checks, and poses clear one‑at‑a‑time questions.
  • MAJOR FUNCTION – Instructional Feedback: The teacher gives correct‑or‑incorrect feedback to encourage growth, provides prompt feedback on out‑of‑class work, affirms correct oral responses, and probes, repeats, or gives clues for incorrect or missing responses.
  • MAJOR FUNCTION – Facilitating Instruction: The teacher develops an instructional plan compatible with school and system‑wide goals, uses diagnostic information to revise objectives, maintains accurate records, aligns objectives with learning strategies and assessment, and uses resources to support the program.
  • MAJOR FUNCTION – Interacting Within the Educational Environment: The teacher treats all students fairly, interacts effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, and community.
  • MAJOR FUNCTION – Performing Non‑Instructional Duties: The teacher carries out non‑instructional duties as assigned, adheres to laws and policies, and follows a professional development plan.

Performs other related work as required.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Degree in education or a related field that qualifies for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Physical Requirements: Ability to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools, lift, carry, push, pull light objects, and stand or walk for extended periods consistent with light work.

Data Conception: Ability to compare and judge observable characteristics of data, people or objects.

Interpersonal Communication: Ability to convey information orally or in writing and receive instructions from superiors.

Language Ability: Ability to read correspondence, reports, forms and prepare basic written materials.

Intelligence: Ability to apply logical or scientific thinking, interpret technical instructions, and draw valid conclusions from multiple variables.

Verbal Aptitude: Ability to deliver information, explain procedures, follow oral and written instructions, and communicate in technical terminology.

Numerical Aptitude: Ability to use formulas, perform calculations, and apply statistical principles.

Form/Spatial Aptitude: Ability to inspect items for proper dimensions.
