Job Description

Job Title: Exceptional Children Teacher

Reports To: Principal

Salary: Teacher Salary Scale

Status: 10 months

Summary: The Exceptional Children Teacher will plan and provide appropriate learning experiences for students with disabilities in a variety of educational settings, creating a flexible program and learning environment that supports general education curriculum with supplemental aids, accommodations, and other needed support.

Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Follow all board policies, procedures, and directives from supervisors.
  • Comply with all state and federal policies for Exceptional Children services (referral, eligibility, and services).
  • Develop and use instructional materials suitable for verbal and/or visual instruction of students with a wide range of abilities.
  • Develop (with the IEP team) and implement an Individual Educational Program for each assigned child.
  • Provide self‑contained, resource, or inclusion services for assigned students.
  • Establish and maintain standards of student control required to achieve effective participation in all activities.
  • Assess academic and social growth of students.
  • Keep appropriate records.
  • Complete all paperwork assigned in a timely manner and follow federal timelines as required.
  • Provide appropriate instruction and activities for students to meet school/district policies, goals, and objectives.
  • Collaborate with general education staff to ensure implementation of IEPs in the general education classroom, monitor student progress, and plan for classroom accommodations, modifications, and resource lessons.
  • Communicate with parents through a variety of means.
  • Hold parent conferences to discuss individual student progress and school initiatives.
  • Create a safe and welcoming classroom climate and a community based on respect and democratic principles.
  • Maintain professional competence through in‑service professional development and university courses.
  • Participate cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to develop the evaluation method with district guidelines.
  • Select instructional materials.
  • Supervise students during in/out of class activities.
  • Participate in faculty and/or district committees.
  • Actively participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs).
  • Attend EC team meetings and division meetings.
  • Schedule IEP meetings in a timely manner with parents and IEP team members.
  • Perform non‑instructional duties as scheduled to maintain student safety and school appearance (traffic duty, clean‑up work area, etc.).
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Inform EC Director of any concerns, issues, or potential issues with EC.

Minimum Education, Experience and Requirements:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree from an approved education program in the subject area.
  • NC teaching license or qualifications to obtain an NC teaching license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Skilled in assessment and disaggregating data for teaching and learning.
  • Ability to meet the needs of all learners.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and continuously improve instruction.
  • Ability to analyze situations, determine options, and make appropriate decisions based on facts.
  • Ability to develop and compile records and reports.
  • Must be able to use a variety of technology devices such as computers, copiers, calculators, etc.
  • Ability to compare and/or judge the characteristics of data, people, or objects.
  • Ability to speak and/or signal to convey information, including receiving instructions from administrators.
  • Ability to read and prepare correspondence, reports, handbooks, forms, lists, etc.
  • Ability to record and deliver information, and to explain procedures and follow oral and written instruction.

Physical Requirements: The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, talk, and listen. Occasionally the employee may use hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and may lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.
