Part-Time Adult Basic Education (ABE) Instructor

The Part-Time Adult Basic Education (ABE) Instructor provides high-quality, student-centered instruction to adult learners seeking to strengthen foundational academic, workforce, and college-readiness skills. The instructor plans, develops, and delivers standards-based instruction in areas that may include reading, writing/language arts, mathematics, digital literacy, workforce preparation, and other foundational academic skills appropriate to students' educational functioning levels. Instruction shall align with the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) College and Career Readiness Adult Education Content Standards, applicable Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Title II/Adult Education and Family Literacy Act (AEFLA) requirements, National Reporting System (NRS) requirements, and Roanoke-Chowan Community College policies and procedures.

The instructor supports students in developing the academic and employability skills necessary to achieve measurable skill gains and successfully transition to high school equivalency preparation, postsecondary education, occupational training, employment, and/or other identified educational and career goals.

Job Description

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan, prepare, and deliver effective standards-based instruction appropriate for adult learners at varying educational functioning levels.
  • Provide instruction in foundational academic areas including reading, writing/language arts, mathematics, digital literacy, workforce preparation, and other areas appropriate to Adult Basic Education.
  • Develop and maintain lesson plans aligned with the North Carolina College and Career Readiness Adult Education Content Standards and applicable program requirements.
  • Use assessment results and other student-performance data to identify individual learning needs and guide instructional planning.
  • Provide differentiated, contextualized, small-group, individualized, and whole-group instruction to address varying academic levels and learning needs.
  • Incorporate evidence-based instructional practices designed to improve student achievement and measurable skill gains.
  • Integrate technology and digital literacy into instruction and assist students with effectively using educational technology and approved online learning platforms.
  • Connect academic instruction to real-world applications, workforce preparation, career exploration, postsecondary education, and occupational training opportunities.
  • Create and maintain a positive, respectful, inclusive, and student-centered learning environment.
  • Monitor student attendance, participation, academic progress, persistence, and achievement throughout the instructional period.
  • Encourage student retention through consistent communication, academic support, goal setting, attendance follow-up, and appropriate referrals.
  • Maintain accurate and timely student attendance records, lesson plans, instructional documentation, progress records, and other required program documentation.
  • Ensure records are completed and submitted according to College, NCCCS, WIOA/AEFLA, NRS, and applicable grant requirements.
  • Assist students in establishing educational and career goals and monitor progress toward those goals.
  • Prepare students, when appropriate, for transition into High School Equivalency (HSE), Adult High School (AHS), postsecondary education, workforce training, or employment.
  • Participate in required College & Career Readiness orientation, staff meetings, professional development, training, and instructional activities.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student educational records in accordance with FERPA and College policies.
  • Assist with student recruitment, retention, orientation, registration, assessment, transition activities, and College & Career Readiness events when needed.
  • Teach at the main campus and/or approved off-campus locations as assigned based upon program needs.
  • Perform other duties related to the position as assigned by the Dean of College & Career Readiness.
