Teacher of the Visually Impaired - 16 hours/week for 26-27 School Year

This position is for 16 hours per week. It is eligible for a signing bonus of $1,500 (pro‑rated based on employment start date) for applicants not currently employed with Wilkes County Schools. Benefit eligibility is determined by job status and percentage of employment. In addition, Wilkes County Schools offers a local salary supplement of 5%.

Provide special education services to students identified as disabled in accordance with state and federal regulations. Work involves developing and implementing the Individual Education Program in classroom settings that are compatible with the student’s age and developmental level. The teacher is responsible for developing lesson plans, adapting materials, and designing activities to assist EC students develop appropriate academic, behavioral, and social skills and to meet their IEP goals.

The teacher monitors student’s progress and maintains records in compliance with state and federal guidelines.

• Develop and implement an instructional plan that aligns with school and system‑wide curricular goals and the students’ Individual Education Program.
• Develop Individual Education Programs and implement them, updating as needed based on diagnostic information from tests and assessments.
• Provide direct special education instruction to identified students.
• Employ a variety of teaching methods and adapt or develop materials as needed.
• Monitor student behavior, maintain classroom discipline, deescalate inappropriate behaviors, teach appropriate behavioral strategies, restrain students when necessary, and record/report restraints.
• Assist disabled students with personal and self‑help needs such as eating and toileting.
• Communicate with parents through periodic written progress reports.
• Act as a case coordinator for assigned students; consult with community caregivers, support professionals, and parents.
• Maintain student records in accordance with NC Procedures Governing Programs and Services for Children with Disabilities and comply with state and federal statutes.
• Treat all students fairly and equitably, interacting effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, and community.
• Follow a professional development plan and demonstrate evidence of growth.
• Maintain basic files and records.
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessary.
• Complete random moment‑in‑time studies as required by MAC program guidelines.
• Perform other related work as required.

Bachelor’s degree in special education with at least one area of disability as a teacher. Must be licensed in North Carolina.
