Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited college with a degree in physical education
  • Certified with a current “class A” teacher’s certificate in the State of North Carolina
  • Completion of, or working towards, certification in Adapted Physical Education

Job Goals:

To coordinate, develop and implement the physical programs for those exceptional students who are unable to function safely or successfully in the regular physical education program.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Direct Services
  • To teach adapted physical education to designated classes
  • To direct the development of all Adapted Physical Education programs within the Local Education Agency (L.E.A.)
  • To design and administer appropriate physical fitness and motor proficiency tests
  • To recommend, design and/or coordinate construction of specialized adapted physical education equipment; to provide a program for appropriate usage of such equipment
  • To develop an adapted physical education curriculum guide applicable to the Local System
  • To participate in the development of each of the adaptive physical education Individual Education Programs (IEP’S)
  • Indirect Services
  • To determine the needs of the adapted physical education program and design ways to meet those needs
  • To organize in-service training programs for classroom and physical education teachers to help in the continuation of adapted physical education activities
  • To educate administrators, teachers, parents, physicians and the community about the purposes, needs and goals of the Adapted Physical Education Program in the schools
  • To coordinate the scheduling of college and university students who are interested in observing adapted physical education classes
  • To supervise student teachers who are working in the area of Adapted Physical Education
  • To serve as a resource to the administrative staff, classroom teachers of exceptional children, regular classroom teachers and physical educators in matters concerning appropriate physical education programs for exceptional children
  • Administrative
  • To assist in the formulation and update of policies and procedures dealing specifically with the Adapted Physical Education Program
  • To serve as a member of the “team approach” in providing services for our disabled students, along with other professionals such as Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Counselor, Psychologist, etc
  • To keep abreast of and advise the Board of Education, teachers, other professionals, parents and the community of the status of adapted physical education in the local, state and national levels

Ability to administer, interpret, and report assessments used within adapted physical education.

Considerable knowledge of exercise physiology which allows the teacher to safely modify and adapt physical education programs to safely meet the needs and abilities of students.

Ability to maintain and complete accurate records and to develop reports as required. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.

Strong behavior management and discipline skills.

Ability to work in varied settings and devise a working schedule compatible with several school locations.
