Assistant​/Associate Professor of Religion; Mariam Coltrane Schramm Endowed Professor of Religion & Christian Education

PURPOSE:

The Assistant/Associate Professor of Religion advances Pfeiffer University's mission through excellence in teaching, student advising and mentoring, scholarship, and service. The faculty member will teach courses in Religion, Interdisciplinary Studies, and the University's Core/Pathways curriculum and, if appropriately qualified, may also teach courses in another, related discipline.

As coordinator of the Religion and Practical Theology program, the faculty member will help shape its future direction through an interdisciplinary approach to the study of religion, faith, and contemporary life. Central to this work will be helping students explore vocation and discern meaningful paths rooted in their faith, interests, and sense of purpose. The faculty member will also foster opportunities for servant leadership and community-engaged learning across the program and the broader University.

The faculty member will contribute actively to the intellectual, spiritual, and communal life of the University and help strengthen Pfeiffer's historic and onqoinq relationship with The United Methodist Church.

This is a full-time, 9-month position, which starts in August 2027. This position is located on Pfeiffer's campus in Misenheimer, NC.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will have the following responsibilities:

Teach up to 26 IUs during the academic year. Teaching assignments will include courses in:

The Religion and Practical Theology major

Core/Pathways courses

Interdisciplinary Studies major

Depending on qualifications, teaching assignments may also include courses in the Humanities program.

Advise and mentor students.

Participate in shared governance, committee assignments, etc .Recruit new students to the undergraduate major in Religion and Practical Theology Work cooperatively with campus ministries.

The candidate will possess a PhD (ABO considered) in one of the fields traditionally associated with theological education (e.g. Theology, Biblical Studies, Church History, Religion and Literature, etc.).Preferred qualification:

Qualifications to teach courses in the humanities (ideally, 18 graduate hours in History, Church History, Philosophy or a related field). Preference will given to applicants who are active laypersons in a local United Methodist Church and/or clergy who are elders and deacons in full connection with a United Methodist conference.

Outstanding candidates with active standing within another denomination in full communion with the United Methodist tradition may also be considered.
