Why do we need you ?
As an Automation Engineer II at the Certain Teed Gypsum plant in Roxboro, NC, you will lead development and implementation of World Class Manufacturing (WCW) projects, processing methods and controls in a manner consistent with Certain Teed Gypsum Mission, Vision, Values, and Objectives. Through the application of engineering fundamentals and advanced process control tools, you will ensure that processes are capable and in control, and reduce process variations.
As Automation Engineer II, you will also provide leadership in the implementation and support of plant automation, electrical, and database systems.
Key Focus Areas and Responsibilities:
* Lead and support plant automation, controls, and electrical systems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient 24/7 manufacturing operations
* Develop, implement, and sustain World Class Manufacturing (WCW) and continuous improvement initiatives that reduce downtime, minimize process variation, and improve overall equipment reliability
* Design, program, maintain, and troubleshoot PLC, HMO/SCADA, VFD, instrumentation, and industrial network systems across the plant
* Provide advanced technical troubleshooting and root cause analysis support to maintenance and operations teams; implement sustainable corrective actions
* Plan, manage, and execute automation and controls projects, including scope development, cost/benefit analysis, contractor coordination, commissioning, and documentation.
* Maintain and upgrade plant automation systems to address lifecycle management and technical obsolescence, aligning with company and industry standards
* Develop and maintain automation documentation, including P&IDs, electrical schematics, I/O lists, wiring diagrams, SOPs, and work instructions
* Support Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) and Autonomous Maintenance through operator training, equipment standardization, and data-driven problem solving
* Analyze process and equipment data to generate insights, reports, and recommentations that drive safety, quality, reliability, and cost improvements
* Collaborate cross-funtionally with engineering, maintenance, operations, IT/OT, vendors, and corporate teams to align automation strategies and best practices
* Champion safety, compliance, and risk reduction, ensuring adherence to NEC, NFPA-70E, corporate standards, and site safety requirements
* Serve as a technical mentor and informal leader, providing training and guidance on automation systems, troubleshooting methods, and safe work practices

Required:
* Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience
* Minimum three (3) years of applied professional experience in industrial manufacturing automation and controls
* Hands-on experience with PLC, HMI/SCADA. VFD/drive systems, and industrial instrumentation
* Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot electrical, automation, and control systems, including field devices, networks, safety circuits, and control logic
* Working knowledge of industrial networks and protocols (e.g., Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Device Net, Profibus or similar)
* Knowledge of electrical safety standards and codes, including NEC and NFPA-70E (Arc Flash)
* Experience creating, maintaining, and updating automation documentation such as P&IDs, electrical schematics, I/O lists, wiring diagrams, and as-built drawing drawings
* Ability to modify and develop PLC code and support automation system changes using controlled change-management practices
* Strong analytical, problem-solving, and independent work capabilities
* Proficient with Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams)
* Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate with both hourly and salaried employees
Preferred:
* Experience with Rockwell, Siemens, PILZ, or Honeywell PLC, motion, and drive platforms
* Familiarity with data collection systems, databases, and manufacturing reporting/visualization tools (historian/SQL concepts)
* Knowledge of gypsum manufacturing processes and equipment, including process control applications
* Basic proficiency with AutoCAD or AutoCAD Electrical
* Applied knowledge of combustion analysis, mass and energy balance, and fluid/machine dynamics
Physical Requirements & Work Environment:
* Ability to work on plant floor in a manufacturing environment, including exposure to noise, dust, heat, and industrial equipment
* Required to stand and walk for extended periods, with frequent movement between production areas
* Ability to climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel, and crouch as needed to access equipment and control systems
* Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally
* Frequent use of hands and fingers for fine motor tasks, including working with tools, controls, and computer equipment
* Ability to read, write, and interpret technical documentation, schematics, and drawings continuously
