Description of WorkAssist in reviewing driveway permits, encroachments, evaluating daily roadway inspection reports; reviewing contractor claims for additional contract time or compensation; computing water velocities and depths needed to analyze ditches, channels, and pipes; conducting engineering studies and projects; preparing technical letters and reports; attending planning and zoning meetings; providing DOT comments to developers.
Evaluate data collected by field personnel and incorporate it into transportation studies; review contract plans, specifications, materials testing results, agreements or provisions for accuracy and completeness; develop and maintain official records of the State Road system; monitor and report project status; assign work to technicians.
Review subdivision plans, outdoor advertising, junkyard permits, oversize and overweight permits, road additions and deletions, right‑of‑way disposals.
Assist higher‑level engineers in the implementation and administration of roadway and structure construction projects awarded to private contractors. Work may include other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications- Considerable knowledge of civil engineering principles, including highway construction and maintenance methods and techniques.
- Ability to read and interpret highway construction plans and to analyze and solve difficult highway maintenance and construction problems.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with DOT staff, government officials, private engineers, developers, and the public.
- Computer proficiency using Microsoft and SAP applications.
- Knowledge of engineering standards, policies and procedures related to transportation.
- Experience in customer service involving explanation of complex engineering concepts.
- Experience writing memos, reports, and emails that clearly convey technical information and engineering concepts.
- Preferred experience with personnel management.
- Must be able to legally operate a state vehicle and work under outside environmental conditions, noise, and traffic hazards.
- Most importantly, a bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Salary Grade and Range: NC16 – $57,983 – $101,470
Special QualificationsMay require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
