Entry-level Engineering Drafter

The purpose of the Designer I position is to apply technical skills to design complex projects and provide expertise in safe, cost effective and reliable distribution power facilities for residential, commercial, and industrial projects.

• Prepare project and job packages that include material lists, requisitions, labor estimates, site drawings and construction drawings for various installations of electrical facilities in a cost-effective manner that maximizes safety and service reliability.
• Read and interpret blueprints, maps, change orders, improvement plans, construction specifications, procedure manuals, operational procedures, etc.
• Perform drafting work and assist in the preparation of designs, plans and reports.
• Make accurate engineering calculations.
• Collect and analyze field data and prepare accurate and detailed reports and records.
• Learn, practice, and promote ALL safety policies and procedures 100% of the time.
• Apply various codes, requirements, regulations, policies, and procedures to all assigned work to create safe and cost-effective designs for projects of moderate complexity for both overhead and underground projects.
• Use various design software and work management tools.
• Evaluate distribution equipment such as transformers and fusing.
• Follow utility construction practices on public right of way (ROW) and private land.
• Regularly communicate job status to assure client expectations and deliverable dates are met.
• Coordinate with construction personnel and clients to resolve any project issues.
• Develop relationships with key internal and external customers while supporting both company and client’s business goals and expectations while representing themselves both positively and professionally.
• Maintain files and records in an organized manner.
• Perform other duties as assigned by management.

• Associate degree in engineering, engineering technology, design technology, or a related field and at least 2+ years of utility experience is preferred. A Bachelor of Science (BS) in Engineering will qualify for this position with no prior experience. High School diploma/GED with 4+ years of equivalent utility experience without a degree.
• Proficient in basic principles and practices of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, general science and scales of weight and measurements as applied to engineer’s computations and construction (using currency and other forms of measurement).
• Proficient user of Microsoft Office based applications.
• Ability to respond to common inquiries from customers, regulatory agencies, or the business community.
• Ability to read and understand documents such as policy manuals, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Utilized common-sense understanding in order to carry out written, oral, or diagrammed instructions.
• Maintains confidentiality and uses discretion with business information.
