Please read before applying. This is a manufacturing equipment CAD role in an automotive and EV battery plant, not a building-services or HVAC drafting role. The team receives many applications from HVAC, electrical, and building-design backgrounds, and that context does not transfer. Applications should show CAD work in automotive, battery, or manufacturing plant environments, together with proven GD and T.
ABOUT THIS ROLEA leading automotive EV battery manufacturer is hiring a Senior CAD Engineer to support Production Engineering battery-manufacturing projects at its Liberty, North Carolina plant (100% on-site). You will create and maintain 2D drawings and 3D models for production equipment layouts, equipment installation packages, and fabrication packages in an automotive and battery manufacturing context. Utility, piping, HVAC, pneumatic, and hydraulic scope is touched as part of plant work, but the core of the role is manufacturing equipment.
This is a senior, hands-on position requiring proven GD and T expertise, an advanced Autodesk toolset, and the ability to carry many CAD tasks at once independently, with room to grow into a people-leader.
- Create, revise, and maintain 2D CAD drawings and 3D models of production equipment to project standards
- Develop process-equipment, installation, and facility layouts for battery manufacturing lines
- Create contractor-ready packages for installation, quotation, procurement, fabrication, construction, and bidding
- Define equipment locations, tie-in points, utility routing, dimensions, elevations, access clearances, interfaces, and installation constraints
- Build assembly drawings, fabrication drawings, Bills of Material, parts lists, and vendor or contractor drawing packages
- Incorporate engineer markups, contractor redlines, field-verification results, and as-built updates; verify field conditions during walkdowns
- Identify layout, constructability, access, maintainability, safety, and production-flow concerns
- Coordinate drawing and model updates with engineering, production, maintenance, safety, vendors, and contractors
- Maintain CAD files, drawing registers, revisions, document-control records, and release workflows
- Carry several concurrent CAD work streams and own their schedules with minimal supervision
- Also supports mechanical, electrical, piping, HVAC, pneumatic, and hydraulic scope where it interfaces with production equipment
- Required:
CAD experience in automotive, battery, or manufacturing plant environments. Primarily building-services, HVAC, or architectural CAD backgrounds are not a fit for this role. - Required:
proven GD and T expertise per ASME Y14.5 (datum structures, tolerances, weld symbols, materials, and finishes) - Required:
able to run multiple concurrent projects with minimal supervision and own the schedules - 7 plus years of CAD experience in industrial, manufacturing, equipment-installation, or plant environments
- Advanced AutoCAD for 2D layouts, equipment layouts, installation drawings, and contractor-scope drawings
- Working proficiency with Autodesk Revit, Inventor, Navisworks, Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC), and Autodesk Forma
- Associate degree, technical certification, CAD or drafting certificate, or equivalent practical experience
- Ability to create manufacturing-ready and construction-ready drawing packages and interpret multi-discipline vendor drawings
- Ability to work in a plant environment (field walkdowns, PPE) and travel up to 10% with about 10% overtime as required
- Preferred:
Bachelor's degree;
Autodesk certification, ASME Y14.5 or GD and T training, or OSHA 10;
Autodesk Vault;
AutoCAD Plant 3D or Civil 3D, Solid Works, CATIA, Micro Station;
AutoCAD Electrical; automotive, battery, clean-room, and new-plant-startup experience
- 2D drafting and 3D modeling of production equipment and equipment installation layouts in a manufacturing plant
- GD and T application per ASME Y14.5 (datums, tolerances, weld symbols, finishes)
- Managing several concurrent drawing packages and their schedules independently
- Fabrication and installation package creation: assembly and detail drawings, parts lists, balloon callouts, BOM, and contractor-ready bidding packages
- Multi-disciplinary drawing interpretation (mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, piping, utility, vendor)
- Redline, field-verification, and as-built incorporation with disciplined revision control
- Drawing-standards management: title blocks, layers, naming conventions, registers, release…
