M&A Associate (Energy)

Santander Corporate & Investment Banking (Santander CIB) is Santander's global division that supports some of the world's most complex and sophisticated corporate and institutional clients, offering customized services and value-added wholesale products to best meet their needs.

SCIB is looking for a M&A Associate (Energy) based out of Luca de Tena Office (Madrid)

To succeed in this role, you will be responsible for:

  • Taking day-to-day ownership of execution work streams across M&A and equity-led processes, driving timelines, deliverables and stakeholder coordination across internal and external parties
  • Leading, reviewing and steering complex financial models and valuation analyses (operating models, DCFs, merger and accretion/dilution, sensitivities), ensuring outputs are robust, decision-ready and committee-quality
  • Owning valuation work streams using DCF, trading comparables, precedent transactions and other sector-relevant approaches, and translating analysis into clear conclusions and client messaging
  • Driving the drafting, structuring and quality control of senior-level client materials (pitch books, strategic reviews, management presentations, information memoranda, board materials and internal approval documents)
  • Managing due diligence work streams and advisor interaction (legal, accounting, consultants), maintaining process discipline, anticipating issues early, and ensuring a clean "run-the-process" cadence
  • Supporting senior bankers in client dialogue and strategic analysis, contributing to origination angles, transaction positioning and negotiation readiness
  • Developing and maintaining a strong view on EMEA energy and energy transition dynamics (valuation, regulation, capital flows, investor behaviour), proactively sharing actionable insights with the team
  • Mentoring and managing Analysts and interns, setting execution standards, reviewing outputs, and ensuring consistently high quality under pressure

The following requirements represent the knowledge, skills, and abilities essential for success in this role. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Professional Experience

  • Prior investment banking experience is required: typically 4–6 years in M&A / Corporate Finance advisory within a leading investment bank or top-tier advisory platform
  • Strong live deal execution track record, with demonstrated ability to lead work streams, manage parallel deliverables and perform under tight timelines
  • Proven experience producing and reviewing senior-quality client deliverables and internal committee documentation, with disciplined quality control and attention to detail
  • Energy / power / utilities / infrastructure / energy transition exposure is strongly preferred, with credible interest in the sector landscape and transaction drivers
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, including comfort interacting with clients and advisors, and working effectively across cross-border/internal teams

Education

  • Undergraduate degree with a strong academic track record

Languages

  • Fluency in English and Spanish
  • Additional European languages (Preferred)

Hard Skills

  • Advanced financial modelling and valuation skills, with a strong grasp of accounting and corporate finance fundamentals
  • Advanced PowerPoint and Excel skills, with the ability to drive a "clean, client-ready" standard across outputs
  • Familiarity with Bloomberg, Capital IQ, Fact Set, Refinitiv, Mergermarket, Infralogic or similar tools (Preferred)
  • Practical understanding of energy-sector valuation considerations (e.g., regulated assets, contracted cash flows, infrastructure-style frameworks) is a plus

Soft Skills

  • Strong analytical, communication and presentation skills
  • High ownership mindset, reliability under pressure, and strong attention to detail
  • Ability to lead, mentor and review junior team members, with a collaborative approach and high professional standards
