General Statement of Duties

The Finance Intern II position is a paid internship within the Department of Finance, Treasury Division. It is for a current undergraduate level students pursuing careers in finance, accounting, public administration, or related fields. The Treasury Division is responsible for issuing tax bills and collecting taxes and other amounts due to Henrico County.

As a Henrico County intern, you will gain meaningful, hands‑on experience while contributing to work that serves our community. Under the guidance of experienced professionals, interns observe daily operations, assist with projects and administrative tasks, conduct research, and take part in meetings that offer real insight into how local government works. This internship is designed to connect classroom learning to real‑world public service, build professional network and workplace skills, and introduce students to the wide range of career paths available in local government.

Essential Duties

Eligibility: Current undergraduate level student

Preferred Area of Study: Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, Economics, Political Science, Public Administration, and Real Estate Finance

Expected End Date: Depending on the student selected and the department's budget, workload, student performance, schedule/availability and interest could continue beyond the fall semester

Work Hours: Flexible Monday
- Friday (core hours 8:30 am - 4:30 pm. Interns could be scheduled to work up to 29 hours per week based on the assignment and the intern's availability.

Department & Work Location (address): 4301

E. Parham Road, Henrico, Va. 23228 with occasional work at the Eastern Government Center located at 3820 Nine Mile Road that may be required.

Internship Status: Paid internship, $16/hour

The Intern will have the opportunity to shadow staff, assist with daily operations, and perform a variety of assignments, including:

  • Conducting research
  • Reviewing reports
  • Processing returned mail
  • Verifying deposits and payments and identifying needed corrections
  • Performing general clerical and administrative tasks
  • Filing and maintaining records
  • Reviewing and verifying financial or operational data
  • Assisting with accounting processes
  • Developing or assisting with PowerPoint presentations
Required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of Accounting principles;
    Account Analysis; business principles and practices;
  • Good computer skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse audience of County employees and citizens integral to the internship;
  • Excellent organization and research skills with the ability to collect and organize facts/tasks effectively;
  • Excellent attention to details;
  • Excellent knowledge of and familiarity with computer systems with demonstrated proficiency in the use of a personal computer and common software products (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point);
  • Ability to work multitask and manage priorities;
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as a part of a team;
  • Ability to meet assigned deadlines.
Through the Internship, the student will gain knowledge of:
  • The overall operations of the Finance department and how the work of the Treasury office supports its mission
  • Operations of the Treasury section through tasks and assignments
  • Specific real-world application of class concepts
  • Exposure to County leadership and staff via meeting attendance
  • Mentorship from professionals in the field
  • Careers that exist in local government in this field
