Position Overview

Correctional Sergeant III (S), Position Number , Grade NC09, located at Foothills Correctional Institution in Morganton, Burke County, NC. Reports to the Correctional Housing Unit Manager II. The role provides supervision and management of subordinate officers in a close/minimum custody male facility, overseeing custody and welfare of offenders across minimum, medium, and close custody levels.

• Conduct shift line‑up, assign shifts, and verify personnel fitness for duty.
• Supervise and assign subordinate officers to specific areas or posts.
• Complete, review, and maintain time reports, duty rosters, leave schedules, performance evaluations, and administrative forms.
• Account for persons and funds to ensure equipment readiness.
• Ensure subordinate officers perform duties related to custody and welfare of offenders.
• Work rotating and various duty assignments within defined work level.

Minimum qualifications:

High School or GED diploma and three years correctional officer experience, or two years as Correctional Officer III, or an equivalent education/experience combination.

Special qualifications:
Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission; pass a criminal background check; produce negative drug screening; successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations; possess a valid driver’s license.
