The primary mission of the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is to provide science-based environmental stewardship for the health and prosperity of all North Carolinians. The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is the lead stewardship agency for the protection of North Carolina's environmental resources. The organization, which has offices from the mountains to the coast, administers regulatory programs designed to protect air quality, water quality, and the public's health, and works to advance in all-of-the-above energy strategy that fits North Carolina's needs.

DEQ also offers technical assistance to businesses, farmers, local governments, and the public and encourages responsible behavior with respect to the environment through education programs provided at DEQ facilities and through the state's school system. DEQ touches the lives of all North Carolinians in many ways to enhance and ensure our quality of life.

This Marine Fisheries Commission Coordinator provides fishery policy support for the Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF), managing and coordinating the activities and functions of the Marine Fisheries Commission (MFC) and their associated Advisory Committees. The position is also responsible for oversight of MFC rule development, including supervision of the division's Rule making Coordinator. The position interfaces with the division director, deputy directors, commission chairman, commission counsel, division counsel, and commissioners as a source of information on fishery management issues and rule development.

The position provides education and guidance on division fisheries policies, positions, and processes. This includes managing the MFC Office responsible for planning, preparing, and attending MFC meetings and supporting the MFC Advisory Committees (five standing regional and subject-matter committees and, at least, two fishery management plan committees for a total of at least 75 committee members).This position requires a high degree of flexibility in moving from one issue to another and handling a wide variety of issues and responsibilities.

This position must have thorough attention to detail and an ability to track and manage several processes simultaneously with tight deadlines. The position must be able to process and quickly understand complex scientific material, including fisheries biology and fundamental fisheries management principles, and provide guidance on how to translate this information to a non-scientific level. The position requires you to have excellent verbal and written communication skills.

The work schedule involves numerous night meetings and includes frequent travel. The work schedule is generally 40hours per week, but frequent overtime is expected. The employee in this position must have the ability to work overtime and travel overnight.

Manages highly sensitive issues and interacts with individuals (citizens, legislators, local officials, and consultants) concerning fishery regulatory decisions and actions. Interfaces with the commission chairman, division director, deputy directors, division staff, commission counsel, division counsel, and commissioners as a source of information on fishery management issues. Assists the DMF in implementation of various state fisheries management mandates and serves in a consulting capacity in daily fisheries management decisions.

Recruitment Range - $67,122 - $74,701

The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) is responsible for the stewardship of the state's marine and estuarine resources. The DMF's jurisdiction encompasses all coastal waters and extends to 3 miles offshore. Agency policies are established by the nine-member Marine Fisheries Commission and the Secretary of the Department of Environmental Quality. North Carolina is a member of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council, the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council, and the National Shellfish Sanitation Program.

Bachelor's degree from an appropriately accredited institution and five (5) years of progressive experience related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
