$38.20 - $57.30The Genetic Counselor serves as a licensed practitioner providing comprehensive genetic counseling services to patients and families within the Cardiovascular Genetics Program. Working directly with patients, physicians, and laboratory partners, this role supports informed medical decision‑making through assessment, education, counseling, follow‑up, and coordination of genetic testing services. The Genetic Counselor plays a critical role in translating complex genetic and clinical information into meaningful guidance while addressing psychosocial needs and connecting patients to appropriate resources.
EssentialFunctions
- Provide comprehensive genetic counseling and testing services, including assessment, interpretation of clinical and laboratory findings, and communication of results to patients and healthcare providers.
- Research genetic disorders and related conditions and convey clinical and genetic information in a clear, accurate, and patient‑centered manner.
- Assess psychosocial factors, offer emotional support, and educate patients and families on the risks, benefits, and limitations of genetic testing and medical procedures to support informed consent.
- Maintain ongoing contact with patients for follow‑up care and refer individuals and families to appropriate community, state, or national resources as needed.
- Prepare thorough written documentation of genetic consultations for patients and referring providers.
- Collaborate directly with laboratory services to order appropriate genetic and related tests and evaluate results upon receipt.
- Coordinate with non‑ACL laboratories to arrange reference testing and additional services not provided internally.
- Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and municipal laws, regulations, and standards related to genetic services.
- Utilize strong organizational, analytical, and problem‑solving skills to manage multiple cases effectively and efficiently.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation using appropriate computer applications and systems.
- Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling from an Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling (ACGC)–accredited program required.
- Active Candidate Status for American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) board certification required.
- Knowledge of laws, regulations, and standards impacting the delivery of genetic services.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively and empathetically under stressful circumstances.
- Strong organizational, presentation, analytical, and problem‑solving skills.
- Basic computer proficiency, including the use of standard office and clinical applications.
