We are seeking a compassionate and skilled PRN Respiratory Therapist (RRT/CRT) to join our team and provide exceptional respiratory care to residents in our skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility. This flexible, as-needed position is ideal for a respiratory therapist who is passionate about improving residents' quality of life while working collaboratively with an interdisciplinary healthcare team.

As a PRN Respiratory Therapist, you will provide respiratory assessments, treatments, education, and clinical support to residents with acute and chronic respiratory conditions, ensuring the highest standards of resident-centered care.

Position Summary

The Respiratory Therapist is responsible for assessing, treating, and monitoring residents with respiratory disorders while collaborating with physicians, nursing staff, and rehabilitation professionals to achieve the best possible clinical outcomes. This position plays an essential role in promoting respiratory health, preventing complications, and responding to respiratory emergencies as needed.

Key ResponsibilitiesResident Assessment & Care
  • Perform comprehensive respiratory assessments and ongoing evaluations.

  • Monitor respiratory status, including oxygen saturation, lung sounds, respiratory effort, and airway function.

  • Develop and implement individualized respiratory care plans in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.

  • Identify changes in resident condition and communicate findings promptly to the appropriate clinical staff.

Respiratory Treatments
  • Administer oxygen therapy, nebulizer treatments, inhaled medications, and other prescribed respiratory therapies.

  • Set up, monitor, and manage CPAP, BiPAP, and other non-invasive respiratory support as ordered.

  • Perform airway clearance techniques, including chest physiotherapy when appropriate.

  • Monitor treatment effectiveness and modify interventions based on physician orders and resident response.

Resident & Family Education
  • Educate residents and families on respiratory equipment, medications, and treatment plans.

  • Provide instruction on breathing exercises, airway clearance techniques, and disease management.

  • Encourage practices that promote respiratory wellness and improve quality of life.

Collaboration & Clinical Support
  • Work closely with physicians, nursing staff, and rehabilitation professionals to coordinate resident care.

  • Participate in interdisciplinary care planning meetings as needed.

  • Assist with respiratory management for residents receiving palliative or end-of-life care when appropriate.

Documentation & Compliance
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and complete clinical documentation.

  • Document respiratory assessments, treatments, resident progress, and significant changes in condition.

  • Ensure compliance with facility policies, professional standards, and state and federal regulations.

Equipment Management
  • Inspect, clean, maintain, and troubleshoot respiratory therapy equipment.

  • Ensure respiratory equipment is functioning properly and available for resident care.

  • Report equipment concerns promptly and follow infection prevention protocols.

Emergency Response
  • Respond promptly to respiratory emergencies and changes in resident condition.

  • Assist with CPR, airway management, and other emergency interventions within the scope of practice.

  • Collaborate with the clinical team during emergency situations to ensure timely, effective care.

QualificationsEducation & Licensure
  • Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Therapy program.

  • Current North Carolina Respiratory Care Practitioner license.

  • Current Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential through the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).

  • Current BLS certification required.

  • ACLS certification preferred.

Experience
  • Previous experience in skilled nursing, long-term care, rehabilitation, or acute care preferred.

  • Experience managing residents with chronic respiratory diseases and non-invasive ventilation is preferred.

Skills
  • Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking abilities.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with an interdisciplinary healthcare team.

Work Schedule
  • PRN (As Needed)

  • Flexible scheduling based on facility needs.

  • Opportunities may include weekdays, evenings, weekends, holidays, and occasional on-call coverage.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, push, and pull throughout the workday.

  • Ability to lift and/or assist with moving residents as needed.

  • Ability to respond quickly and effectively during emergency situations.

  • Ability to work in an environment with potential exposure to infectious diseases while following established infection prevention and safety protocols.
