Summary:

Under the guidance of the Technical Specialist and Manager, this role involves performing specimen processing and various non-technical duties within the laboratory. Responsibilities include patient registration, sample collection, and evaluating sample suitability for testing. Tasks encompass centrifugation, aliquoting, storage, and shipping of specimens. Support clinical testing by preparing slides, loading instruments, and reporting results. Perform waived and point-of-care testing along with phlebotomy.

Responsibilities:
  • Perform phlebotomy as needed at the work site.
  • Accurately receive and log specimens.
  • Process specimens efficiently from receipt to delivery for analysis, adhering to turnaround times.
  • Prepare and package specimens for external testing.
  • Communicate effectively with other departments.
  • Carry out clerical duties proficiently.
  • Set up and perform miscellaneous micro duties when applicable.
  • Load and assist with core lab tasks.
  • Maintain automated equipment and document quality control checks.
  • Follow established laboratory safety, standard precautions, and disposal policies.
  • Assist in training and orienting new staff under supervision.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Education:

High school diploma or GED required. Knowledge of medical terminology and computer skills preferred.

Experience:

At least one year of full-time specimen processing, phlebotomy, or equivalent experience is preferred.

Skills and Abilities:

Ability to take responsibility, make decisions, and work collaboratively in a team environment. Comfortable operating equipment while sitting or standing. Flexible and adaptable to additional hours or shifts under pressure. Strong communication skills including listening, writing, speaking, and reading. Proficient in telephone, laboratory information systems, email, and verbal communication. Excellent customer service orientation. Knowledgeable about laboratory functions, specimen requirements, and processing.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift up to 25 pounds. Frequent bending, squatting, reaching, carrying, pushing, and pulling. Good visual acuity with color discernment and fine manual dexterity. Moderate walking, standing, sitting, and lifting. Exposure to blood borne pathogens and occasional toxic substances. Ability to manage multiple priorities, make independent decisions under pressure, and handle stress effectively. Works well independently and with others in potentially distracting environments.
